COMPETITION DETAILS
Walter Scott Memorial Trophy.

Moving here from Cheltenham, Walter Scott started a The Taunton Duplicate Bridge Circle long before our club existed and ran it successfully for many years. After he passed away, John Gibbs took it over under the name Sweethay, and subsequently our Marjorie and John Dillworth carried it on, reverting to it's original name, for eighteen years. When Walter passed away, Valerie his wife, asked for a competition to be run in his name and wanted it to be a teams of four event with at least two members being below the rank of Regional Master. With Valerie's blessing, Marjorie and John have passed the cup over to our club and have requested we continue to run the competition along the same lines.

So....The Walter Scott Memorial Trophy Competition will take place on Wednesday 2nd. September. Teams of four must have at least two of it's members below the rank of Regional Master. Not sure of your EBU ranking? There are two ways to remedy this. Either log in to the EBU Master Points page, using your EBU membership number and EBU password (you can do this via the NGS section in the Main Menu left) or click on the link here, where I have the overall ranking for the whole of Somerset for you to look through! Valerie Scott and Marjorie and John are very keen for Walter's memory to live on, so please support this event and get a team together. Please add your team to the list on our club board, to enable others to see who might still be available, and help the director arrange a suitable movement.

Taunton Bridge Club ran the Walter Scott trophy for the first time on Wednesday. But the cup has quite a pedigree. Walter founded the Taunton Duplicate Bridge Circle over thirty years ago and several of our current members were taught to play bridge by him. When Walter died his wife asked that a Cup be played for in his name. This was done as the club was taken over first by John Gibbs and then by Marjorie & John Dilworth.

The conditions of the trophy are respected – it is for teams of four with at least two members below the rank of Regional Master.

The Fairlamb Cup

The Fairlamb Cup was donated years ago  in 1956 - by the Fairlamb family - and their stipulation was that this event must be played over two events, each with a different format, on the same day! One event was for Ladies Pairs and the other for Mixed. We all contributed goodies for tea and settled for a long session on a Saturday! Over the years this became unfeasable and the cup went into mothballs. In 2014 our committee decided to resurrect the event and was able to re -arrange the format slightly. We now play this event over two consecutive Wednesdays, with our normal duplicate format - and no goodies!

Players wishing to enter, need to play with the same partner on both nights and your pairing must be either a Ladies pair, or Mixed. No men's pairs can enter, but of course, as always, everyone is welcome to play even if not entering. The first is on Wednesday ....... July, followed on the ......... As with all club competitions, there will be no spare partner on either night.

We look forward to seeing you.

STEELE TEAMS OF FOUR.

On .............. we will be holding The Steele Teams of Four. Any combination of players may take part. Please sign up your team on the board........this will enable others to know who might still be available to form a team, and help the director sort out a suitable movement.

SWISS TEAMS

This year our annual club Swiss Teams Competition will be held on................     Your team of four  must only have two players with an average of more than 52% over the past twelve months - not necessarily in the same partnership! You can find your average (and others of course) by looking on the Main Menu, and going  into Our Club Competition > Swiss Teams. The cut off date for your assessment will be three weeks before the event, but as a guide, a current average for you in this competition is available to view at any time prior to this date. It will help if you would add your team to the list on our club board as it will make the evening's organisation easier for our director.

Michael Coda County Simultaneous Pairs
Michael Coda County Simultaneous Pairs

This year, our club will be holding our heat of The Michael Coda Cup on .............   It is a Charity event held in memory of Sheila's father, Michael, who was a 'leading light' in both our club, where he was treasurer for many years, and the County. Sheila has nominated......................... Don't forget it's a Simultaneous Pairs Competition, being run using the same boards throughout the County during the entire week, so you will only be able to participate once. Choose Wednesday please!

Can't make it?      Meg would love to see you!

County Championship - Five Tiered Event

Don't be put off by the title. Read on......
This County Event is an inter-club competition which is tiered, so players compete against others of a similar standard. Points are accumulated for the club in each tier - 5 altogether - and the overall winning club is declared Champion Club!
It is divided into two separate competitions. A Teams Event (two tier), as always at Woolavington, and three weeks later Pairs (three tier) also at Woolavington. Our Club Selection Committee has selected the two teams and three pairs to represent us in the Open Sections - the 'top tiers' - but as many pairs and teams  who wish may enter the Restricted Sections. The more, the better! There are two Restricted sections for the pairs event - below National Master, and below Two Star Master, and one in the teams - below Regional Master.
We welcome as many pairs and teams as we can find for this interesting competition. Don't worry about your ranking, or which tier you fit into, Audrey or Shiela will investigate that for you and put in your entry. The more people we have, the more chance we have of regaining the Championship!  Go on......have a go. It's a chance to enter a County event and play against players with similar standard to you. You don't need to have played in a County event before - don't let that 'C' word put you off!
Good news....the club will pay your entrance fee, you just pay for tea/administration!

Two tiered Teams  at Woolavington on Sunday 1st. February arriving no later than 1.45pm.
Three Tiered Pairs also at Woolavington on Saturday 21st. February with the same time.

Still not sure? - speak to Colin, Richard, Audrey, Sheila or Jackie M and we'll try and help....and try and convince you to play!

We need YOU for these events! Please join in!
Butler Scoring
A Butler scored event gives the feel of team scoring but is played just like an ordinary pairs evening. On each hand a par is calculated which is the average score for all those playing the board. Then all pairs score in imps assuming their team mates would have the par score. All the sums are done by the computer so there is no extra work for those playing.
It means overtricks are less important (they are only worth 1 imp), but making a dodgy game which other pairs aren't in will be worth 10 imps depending on vulnerability.
There is one refinement - to avoid freak scores distorting the par (a 1700 penalty for example), the largest NS score and the largest EW score are removed before averaging.
Kennedy Plate

To qualify for the Kennedy Plate, both players in the partnership must have an individual percentage over the year of below 50% . Anyone is welcome to play on the night, but unless both partners qualify, they will be discounted from the competition. Learn about your average by looking in Club Competitions>Kennedy Plate in the menu on the Home Page.

Mixed Pairs.

Our Club's Mixed Pairs event will take place on ............. Any combination of pairs is welcome to come along and join in, but won't of course, be eligible for the competition. We'd like to see as many pairs as possible for this fun evening, so find a partner of the opposite sex and have a go - even if you haven't played together before. Need help finding a partner - ask Colin or Lesley, and they'll be glad to help!

Paul Jones

On Friday ........February, we will be holding our Paul Jones style competition. The Captain of your team will partner each member of the team in rotation - the number of boards will depend on how many teams we have. As we would like to keep the teams fairly evenly matched, just two players in your team are allowed a handicap of over 52%. It will help us organise if we have some idea of numbers, so please sign the list on the board, but do just turn up on the night if you wish with your partner. There will be no spare pair or spare partner, but we will do our best to put pairs together if you let us know in advance.  To check your average for This competition, go into The Main Menu > Competitions > Paul Jones. This will be a light hearted evening - remember last year?

Get your team organised, it will be fun!

Club Percentage

In order to qualify for the Dilworth Cup, our Club Percentage 2014, members needed play with at least three different partners over the season and furthermore only three scores with a given partner were counted. The percentage was gained from the results in our  Club Percentage nights, which were designated dates throughout the season from January until September this year. The best seven scores from fifteen counted.

This year.......
Individual Championship

--------will be our Individual Competition night. Players will play just one hand with everyone else in the room. Even if you are playing with a regular partner, only simple systems are requested - that will add to the concentration! There's no need to arrange a partner for this fun event - just come along and enjoy a game with people you haven't played with before.

Knock Out Teams
This is a good chance to play in a Knock Out Teams event, and still be able to play for the entire evening! Colin's 'magic formula' worked a treat last year. Turn up as a team or a pair or come for a spare partner as everyone will be accommodated. But a request from our Chairperson, Colin,  please  don't make your team too strong. Spread the talent around! It's a great fun evening.
Handicap Pairs.
Member's individual percentage scores for all duplicate nights over the past twelve months, have been averaged. In our Handicap Pairs Competition, the average of the two players in partnership are also averaged. If this gives say 53%, then 3% is taken from their score for the evening. If it was 46%, then 4% would be added! Select your partner carefully!
