Tip 6

This is more of an oddity, from the Devon Swiss teams at Torquay. Second in hand at favourable vulnerability, I opened 1 holding:

                                     ♠  void

                                     ♥  A K 5 3

                                     ♦  A 10 9 7 5 4 2

                                     ♣  7 6

The bidding proceeded 1♠ (overcall), 2♠ from partner (showing a good raise to 3), 3♠, 4♠ from me (cue bid, we’re going to 5, do you fancy six?), 5♠. That’s five consecutive spade bids!

This was passed round to me. Do you double or bid 6?

Well, thinking that partner’s points outside diamonds would be in hearts and clubs, I chanced six. The club ace was missing but onside, and the slam rolled in.

If there’s a point to this (apart from the curiosity of the bidding), it’s that when both sides have a massive fit, follow the adage ‘if in doubt, bid one more’.
