Teams of 8 Season report 2022-2023 |
Report on the Notts League Teams of Eight Division One, 2022-23 Season
This was the first season in which Sunday Tigers was a fully online club, which resulted in some changes in personnel. Some players who were regulars in face-to-face (F2F) matches do not play on BBO. However, the league is likely to make face-to-face matches the default where the travel distances are not too great, though we do not know whether it will do so in 2023-24 we do not yet know. Luckily we recruited five new players this season who made a strong contribution. We ended up third out of six teams in the division, with 101 Victory Points. This was comfortably our best result in Division One to date, although Retford might have pipped us to the third position had they not incurred a substantial penalty for forfeiting a match. Particularly notable was a victory in the first match against Nottingham BC 1, their first loss since 2017/18.

We ended up fifth out of six teams in the division, which was somewhat disappointing. The final standings can be seen by scrolling down.

Note: A total of 20 VPs were awarded for each match, the allocation depending on the margin of victory in IMPs.
As the table above shows, we scored twice as many VPs in the second half of the season as in the first, although why is unclear because we were using much the same group of players (but maybe Woodborough and Nottingham BC 2 had significantly stronger teams in the first match than in the second). In what aspects of the game did we fall short? If we look at some summary statistics from the first five matches (from which we collected only 22 VPs out of a possible 100), the message seems to be that we were inferior in all areas of the game; we were not particularly good at bidding and making slams, enforcing or avoiding large penalties, or bidding and making games, and we lost IMPs on part-score hands as well:

Because of their frequency, bidding and making games is by far the most important thing for winning matches, and we were clearly poor at that before Christmas.
