August 2008 hands
August 27 Hand 3

South has a text book 2C opening. North with 9HCP must make a positive response. I prefer 2NT on this flat hand rather than 3C. South bids 3NT & now North must take up the running knowing that there are at least 32HCP between the combined hands.  On finding that a king is missing the final contract is 6NT.

On the lead of the KD there are 12 tricks on top. However on the run of 5 clubs & 3 hearts West has a discard problem. if the diamond queen is retained the Spade holding must be reduced to 3 cards and now South's fourth spade becomes the thirteenth trick. There is a way for West to know that he can throw the QD. On the lead of the KD East must play the JD which guarantees that he holds the 10. Now the QD can be thrown & West is not squeezed.

On the nightthree pairs bid 6NT two making thirteen tricks. One pair bid 6 clubs but managed somehow to go one light. When a positive reply is made to a 2C opening a slam should be reached

August 27 Hand 15
I was asked how I made 3NT on this hand. Simple answer was a defensive error! The opening 6H lead was won by the Jack. The spades were then tested (Q followed by the A) on getting the bad news I switched to a low club from dummy & here is where the mistake occurred. North must rise with the A & clear the hearts whilst South has an entry. When North ducked I was able to establish two clubs which together with three spades two hearts & three diamonds gave me a top with 430. North can see thar Souths only entry can be in clubs since, if south has the KD it is under the A in dummy - hence the necessity to play his A.
August 20 hand 18

The first three bids by N-S are stright forward . Personally as North Iwith 12HCP including two Aces & a known 8 card trump fit I would bid an aggressive 4H. However N must at least bid an invitational 3H. South with a known 9 card fit & only 6 Losers must accept & bid 4H. This is a classic case where the losing trick count wins out over a simple HCP count. On the text book lead of the KD 11 tricks are made.

On the night 4 pairs bid the game, two making 12 tricks -why didn't their opponents lead the diamond? Two pairs finished in spade contracts deservedly scoring badly. When you have found an 8 card fit don't rebid your suit.

West has a text book opening of 4 Spades - far too strong for a 3S pre-empt & with no defensive tricks ruling out 2S.  East with massive controls opposite 8 playing tricks Knows that slam is on & enquires through Blackwood. Finding one Ace missing (almost certainly the club ace) should bid 6NT protecting the unsupported KC. If 6S is the final contract it should be defeated on a club lead. This happened three times on the night & in each case West erred by rising with the K. North cannot have underled the A which must be with South. Now if South plays the A instead of the J the contract makes. South must realise that two club tricks are needed to set the slam so must the lead to be from four to the Queen & insert the Jack.

On the night 7 played in 6S & four were lucky not to have a club led & so made all 13 tricks. The remaining two pairs lingered in 4S & 5S

august 13 Hand 5

Despite holding a 7 card heart suit North should not preempt when vulnerable against non vul. If paetner is tricklessNorth is going to be thrown repeatedly & is liable to lose 2H, 2S. 2D & 1C for -800 when doubled. The bidding to the spade game is routine. West with his powerful shape must force to game after his partner's 1NT

On the night two pairs preempted & lost 500 when doubled. one was not doubled, two pairs bid the spade game, two Easts landed in 4C(How? Why play in a 4-3 minor when there is a 5-3 major fit?) Once again the double was not used when the occasion arose

August13 Hand15

After North's overcall of 1H I think East should pass to see what happens. North should not rebid his hearts but leave it to partner to decide what to do. If North rebids his hearts East has a simple double & gets a good score with N-S being vulnerable. 2H should go one light if North finesses against the spade jack.

On the night  seven pairs played in heart contracts at the 1,2 or 3 level. All went down except the 1H which was incorrectly doubled. Only one of the higher level contracts was doubled so 2Hx - 2 earned a top. Once again overbidding did not get punished. Don't forget that little red card with a white cross!

Aug 6 Board 13 A Difficult 4 Hearts for East/West

Unless playing weak 2 bids East should initially Pass. West will bid 1 Diamond and over 1 Heart from East, West has a difficult rebid. I think 2NT is best showing 15 or 16 points as 2 Clubs could be passed, and 3 Diamonds should show 6 cards! East should then bid a sporting 4 Hearts.

South will lead 3 Spades taken by East's King. A Heart to the King and Heart return to the Ace reveals the 4:1 break. Now play 3 of Diamonds to the Queen, loosing to North's King. North returns a Spade to Ace in dummy, now play Ace of Diamonds, then 5 of Diamonds North follows suit so you can safely ruff with a small trump as South is now void in trumps. South obliges by playing another Diamond leaving 2 Diamond winners in dummy. You can only access these if Ace of Clubs is with South so you lead 4 Clubs from your hand towards King in dummy, You are in luck, whether South plays the Ace immediately or not you can get to dummy and play your established diamonds. However North still has Jack and 6 of trumps (Hearts) but you have Queen and 10. If Norths ruffs your winning Diamond, you can overruff and draw his last trump. If North does not ruff you discard your loosing Clubs. You make 10 tricks, 2 Spades, 6 Hearts, 1 Diamond and 1 Club; or 2 Spades, 5 Hearts, 2 Diamonds and 1 Club.

On the night the Board was played 10 times, only 2 pairs bid & made 4 Hearts with many pairs only making 9 tricks. No Trumps should not be a good contract!

Aug 6 Board 1 Identify a suit quality of 10 for trumps

With 11 points but a 7 card Heart suit North must open 1 Heart and rebid 2 Hearts over South's bid of 1 Spade. South with 12 points will bid 3NT, South has a suit quality of 10 in Hearts (number of cards in the suit, 7 + number of honour cards, 3) and so converts to 4 Hearts.

The likely lead from East would be 4 of Spades. Take this with Ace, lead 10 Diamonds, 9 from South, taken by West's King. West can do no better than return a Spade to the King in South. Lead singleton Heart, do not finesse, no point with only 1 in dummy, Take Ace of Hearts and lead Queen of Hearts taken by East's King. Now all East/West can do is take their Ace of Clubs. North makes 10 tricks, 6 Hearts, 2 Spades and 2 Diamonds, + 420.

On the night the Board was played 10 times with only 4 pairs bidding and making 4 Hearts. 2 pairs bid 3 Hearts and made 10 tricks for + 170, and a further 4 pairs bid 4 Hearts but only made 9 tricks.
