| December 9th Board 12 Correct Contract? |
I much prefer the rebid of 2 NT by North on this semi-balanced hand rather than 3 Diamonds. South with only 6 points should pass. On the expected lead of 5 of Clubs from West, North should make at least 10 tricks after taking the Diamond finesse for a par score of +180, much better than +130 for the same 10 tricks in a Diamond contract. On the night the hand was played 14 times with 6 pairs in a Diamond part score, 3 Hearts made twice by East/West, and only 2 North/South pairs bid No Trumps, they scored 26 and 22 points respectively out of a total possible of 26! |

| January 9th Board 8 E/W in No Trumps? |
West will usually open 1 Club and after West bids 1 Spade has an awkward rebid, too good for 2 Clubs and not good enough for 3 Clubs! (I hear Chris opened 1NT on this hand which certainly helped solve the problem). East should play in 3NT and normally receive the lead of 3 of Diamonds. After a successful Club finesse there are nine tricks to be taken, 1 Spade, 2 Diamonds and 6 Clubs. Whilst you still hold the Ace of Diamonds you may take the losing Spade finesse and will finish up with 11 tricks in no trumps for a score of 660 to East/West. On the night the hand was played 14 times but only 7 pairs were in game! They of course scored well on this hand. |
