| Board 24 July 8 Another take out double |
|
South has two 5 card majors, 16 points and a 4 loser hand. Both South's doubles are for take out and when North reluctantly bids 2 Spades South with his good hand raises to 3 Spades. East will lead a Club or a Diamond, and North will lose 2 Clubs and the Ace of Spades (trumps) once in again he draws the remaining trumps noting that they fall 2:2. East & West are likely to hold 4 Diamonds each, a known 2 Spades each and as West opened 1 Club, West is therfore likely to hold 5 Clubs, 4 Diamonds, a known 2 Spades and therefore only 2 Hearts. As West opened play Ace and King of Hearts playing him for the doubleton Queen of Hearts for his opening points. You are rewarded when the Queen falls in 2 rounds and you make 10 tricks in Spades.
On the night the Board was played 10 times and 4 Spades was bid & made 5 times, 2 East/West pairs were allowed to play in 3 Clubs giving North/South a poor score of 50 when they went 1 off. Be bold when you have a strong overcalling hand with both majors. |

| Double finesse versus 3:3 break Board 2 July 1st |
|
Bidding is simple with 21 points West raises East's 1NT to 6NT as the combined range must be 33 to 35 points.
There are 11 top tricks, 4 Spades, 2 Hearts, 3 Diamonds & 2 Clubs. The only chance for a 12th trick is in Hearts. A 3:3 break is about a 35% chance but the double finesse is 75%. Win the likely Club lead and cross to East's Queen of Spades. Lead 2 of Hearts and play 9 from dummy, it will lose to the Jack. Win the Club return and play small Spade to East's Ace of Spades. Lead 5 of Hearts, South must play Queen, the King wins, play winning 10 of Hearts, cross to East's hand with Queen of Diamonds to cash Ace of Hearts and claim the rest of the tricks. Small slam made.
On the night the board was played 9 times but only 1 pair bid & made 6NT. |
