Stornoway, Western Isles
Stornoway, Western Isles

The beautiful natural harbour at Stornoway in the Western Isles of Scotland has been recognised as a haven for nearly a thousand years. The commanding Lews Castle, in Lady Lever Park, overlooking the harbour, makes a magnificent backdrop on the landscape on arrival at Stornoway. The town is the main centre of commerce for the Outer Hebrides, where you can still hear the soft, lilt of the Gaelic language being spoken. It is the main seaport of the Isle of Lewis, providing a vital link to mainland Britain. The Port of Stornoway is the gateway to an island steeped in history. The Standing Stones of Calanais, and the Broch at Carloway are recognised among Europe’s most famous ancient monuments. The town of Stornoway is the main administration centre for the Western Isles of Scotland. Steeped in, an often eventful, history Stornoway has long been a place where tourists base their Hebridean vacations. From the very first tours of the Hebrides the town has been the main place of arrival and departure from the islands. Today the communication links are excellent with the nearby Stornoway Airport, ferry terminal and bus station.

If you are planning to visit the Western Isles and would like to play some bridge; please do get in touch.

Bridge that Gap!

At last we are able to celebrate the receipt of the grant from the Big Lottery.

Hurrah!

Last night we tested out one of the new tables.  It's very tactile!  It's also slightly bigger and sturdier so it's a pleasure to sit at and play.  There is plenty of room too for the boards to remain on the table during play which is great.  We have also played using hands that have been dealt by the dealing machine.  We are going to have lots of fun with that! Murdo is putting in a lot of hours for us and by the time we come to play at Borve it should all be running smoothly.

We also have new BridgeMates (BridgeMates2) that are smaller and more compact that our old ones.  These can be programmed in with our names and at the end of the round the screen shows players which table to go to.  Again, Murdo is hoping to have these available for Borve but as we usually play an individual competition there we might not have that particular feature to show you.

So,  exciting times and lots to look forward to.

Keep an eye on your emails and the web site for further updates.

The photo shows the new table, Murdo celebrating his success, Gerda 'presiding' and Irene hard at work trying to make her contract. All Iris can do is sit and hope while Annie and Isabel are full of concentration!  (By the way Irene DID make a small slam)

Thursday's Competition

Eight of us met again on Thursday for Bridge.  Murdo partnered Gwion, Annie played with Isabel, Gerda joined forces with Jenny and Iris and Irene arrived to make the final pair.

Murdo had spent part of the week experimenting with the new 'dealing machine' and bought along some pre-dealt hands.  We had copies of the hands aswell so after play we had a brief look at the papers to see how the bidding could have gone.  There were some interesting results!  The printouts will be great to take home at the end of the evening and cause insomnia.

This week the winners were quite outstanding.  Congratulations to Murdo and Gwion. They beat the computer predictions on several occasions and once again Gwion employed the 'double' successfully and mercilessly took Irene and Iris 5 light in 2D.  Quite an achievement.

In second place were Annie and Isabel.  Despite their misgivings they had a good evening.

Third place was shared by the other two pairs - only 2 points behind second place.

Tips

The opposition bid 1D - 2D and then stop.  Chances are they haven't got any more points than you have.  COMPETE, even if your suit quality isn't that great. You never know - you might steal the contract.

More likely, you'll PUSH them up to the 3 LEVEL, where you'll have a better chance of defeating the contract.
