STANSFIELD RUNNERS-UP IN SUFFOLK TEAMS
STANSFIELD RUNNERS-UP IN SUFFOLK TEAMS

Pipped by the narrowest margin!

Not for the first time, Stansfield punched well above its weight when finishing runners-up in the Suffolk Teams of Four at Colchester over the weekend.

After playing eight five-board matches against other clubs around the county, a gnat's whisker (one Victory Point) separated Woodbridge, the winners, and the Stansfield quartet of Bridget & Paul and Celia & Richard. Colchester were just 1 VP back in third.

STANSFIELD PAIR TRIUMPH IN COUNTY EVENT
STANSFIELD PAIR TRIUMPH IN COUNTY EVENT

'Really Easy' seaside winners

Peter and Andy pulled off a remarkable triumph at Suffolk's flagship bridge competition in Felixstowe on Sunday.

The Stansfield duo won the Really Easy event, which is aimed at less experienced players in the county - but it was anything but 'really easy.'

After 18 boards, they finished less than a percentage point ahead of their nearest rivals, with Sue Cooper and Carol Durston back in third.

The winners deserve huge credit for their performance, less than three years after they started learning the basics of the game and achieved in the highly competitive - and probably rather nerve wracking - atmosphere of a room filled with more than 100 of the region's leading players.

STANSFIELD REPRESENTED IN CHINA
STANSFIELD REPRESENTED IN CHINA

Stansfield pair win prizemoney in World Wide Bridge final but they had to play a different system - on computers!

Keith and Joan arrived safely in China and played in the final of the World Wide Bridge Contest at the weekend for prizemoney of $20,000.

Despite having to play an unfamiliar system - 5-card Majors, a strong No Trump and Transfers - in addition to playing online rather than at a bridge table, they did incredibly well to end the first day in seventh spot. However, Sunday proved something of a 'disaster' according to Joan and at the end of 95 boards they slipped to 19th place.

"The top was 54% and we got 45%, so we did not feel that we were below the standard despite having to change our bidding system," Joan added.

For good measure, they also featured live on Bridge Base Online view graph in real time.

GOLDEN DAY FOR SPECIAL COUPLE
GOLDEN DAY FOR SPECIAL COUPLE
The chocolate cake didn't last long...

The best kept secret turned into a wonderful surprise at the bridge club recently when Denise and John celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

The club stalwarts volunteered to provide the half-time nibbles for the evening long ago without letting on it just happened to be their very special day. In addition to preparing a delicious spread of breads, cheeses, paté (and chocolate cake) they brought along a generous supply of 'sparkling' so that everyone could celebrate the occasion in style.

SUMMER PARTY ATTRACTS MORE THAN 60
SUMMER PARTY ATTRACTS MORE THAN 60

Weather fails to dampen party spirit

Although the sun failed for once to shine on the club's annual summer party, more than 60 members enjoyed a cracking evening.

A welcoming glass of Pimms was followed by a fabulous supper, spearheaded by poached salmon and Gerry's trademark rare beef, delicious salads, and a wonderful array of puddings and cheese and biscuits.

After Richard outlined plans for the club's 10th anniversary celebrations next year, the 'serious' business began with a 14 table, two section duplicate, and a table playing Chicago.

Hot on the heels of leading the club's second team to victory the previous evening, Joan & Keith showed they are in fine form ahead of their forthcoming bridge adventure in China by coming out top.

A huge thank you to everyone who made the evening such a success, particularly Pauline and Sheila.

BRIDGEMATES, COMPUTER GENERATED HANDS, DUPLICATE AND RUBBER BRIDGE - AND MUCH MORE BESIDES
BRIDGEMATES, COMPUTER GENERATED HANDS, DUPLICATE AND RUBBER BRIDGE - AND MUCH MORE BESIDES

STANSFIELD bridge club, formed in 2007 and situated in the heart of Suffolk countryside between Clare and Bury St Edmunds, is not only the county's jolliest and fastest growing bridge club - but also one of the most progressive with a state-of-the-art scoring system, computer generated hands and lively website.

The club meets twice a week in the village hall. On Thursday evening (7 for 7.15pm) the emphasis is very much on having a fun evening out where less experienced players can flourish (and use 'crib sheets' or receive supervision).

There is a half-time  break when players enjoy delicious nibbles prepared by members, and a glass of wine or cup of tea/coffee. A host system is in place so visitors are welcome. Bridgemate scoring means duplicate players get the result on the night and, in addition, computer generated boards are available every week with the hands uploaded on to this website. (Click on 'Results' in right column)

In September 2013 the club voted in favour of affiliating to the English Bridge Union. Thursday nights continue to focus on encouraging beginners and improvers - while Tuesday night (6.45 for 7pm start) offers 24+ boards for more experienced players.

As of July 2016, the club had 123 members.

SECOND 'SUCCESS' FOR SECOND TEAM
SECOND 'SUCCESS' FOR SECOND TEAM

Stansfield's second team have 'won' a second match, albeit thanks to the courtesy of Framlingham.

Framlingham, one of the friendliest clubs in the county, awarded us a walkover after they were unable to get a team together for the planned summer league encounter.

The second team played Stowmarket last week and were on the receiving end of a 60-20 defeat.
