12th to 15th April - Away weekend at Crabwall Manor Hotel, Chester, CH1 6NE
Should you require a partner for either Monday or Wednesday afternoon please seek Sam`s assistance by phone, 01785 818682, mobile 07931702776, text or email.
It would be much appreciated if everyone could help in small ways at the start (getting scorecards etc out) and at the end of sessions (loading the dishwasher, checking the windows are closed and the room is tidy) don't leave the director to do everything!
Presently volunteers are requested to act as stand bys on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month, please contact Terry if you are willing to do either of these dates.
If you would like to try your hand at scoring or directing please contact Terry Maltby or Michael Metcalf, more volunteers for these duties are always needed.
At all club sessions please arrive at least 15 minutes before play is due to start, 6:45 for 7 p.m. start, 7 for 7:15 start, 1:15 for 1:30 start. If you are running late please ring the club, 01785 246611, to let the scorer know you are on your way so that they can factor you in when setting up the movement and scoring systems.
A host system runs on Tuesday evenings in the month whereby if you arrive at the club without a partner not later than 7 p.m. then the "stand by" for that evening will be called in to play with you.

A number of members sadly have health issues effecting their immune systems. Members are politely asked to refrain from playing at the club when suffering from infections. Super clean hands too at all times please to prevent any infection passing via the cards.
Wednesday afternoon players will be sorry to hear of the death of Joan Round who was a popular player at the club playing regularly until August 2018. Joan, well into her nineties, always had a smile on her face, David's picture from the 2012 Christmas Party illustrates this well. Our sympathies go to her family at this sad time.
Please can members return trophies to the club office a.s.a.p. The trophies need to be engraved with the names of this years winners before the dinner on May 12th!
The club will be open for bridge both on Good Friday Evening and Easter Monday Afternoon
We have been kindly invited by Stone Bridge Club to take part in a friendly match at Stone on the evening of Friday 26th April, what you might call perfect timing as the motor bikes are at the showground that day and there can be no bridge at Stafford! Matches against Stone were a regular event until about three years ago when a mutually convenient date could not be found. Terry has put a list up on the notice board for those that are interested in being selected for the Stafford team may sign up. It is hoped that a team of beginners may also like to take part.
The Carole Nash Motor Cycle show is on over the weekend 26th/27th April but will be setting up on the Friday making access to the club virtually impossible. No morning bridge lesson or evening bridge session at the club on Friday 26th April. Why not take the chance to be selected for the match at Stone if you will miss your Friday night bridge by putting your name on the list on the board?
The dinner and prize giving is to take place at the Chase Golf Club as last year. The list for members to sign up to book their place is now up on the notice board along with the menu so that they may indicate their choices. Book now for this highly enjoyable and special annual occasion. Please put names and menu choices on the attached list. Cost £23.50 per person inclusive of wines etc. at the table. Closing date for booking is April 30th.
Thinking ahead the AGM is coming up, please keep the date free, see agenda. There is a list up on the notice board for nominations for the committte, new faces are always welcome.
Final round played Thursday April 11th. Click here for the scratch results of Round 1 played 11th October, Round 2 played 8th November, Round 3 played on Thursday 13th December, Round 4 played Thursday 10th January, Round 5 played Thursday 14th February, Round 6 played Thursday 14th March and Round 7 played Thursday 11th April. The final accumulated results including handicaps for rounds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 are: 1. Davies (291), 2. Seymore (83), 3. Eaves (59), 4. Drinkwater (-22), 5. Maltby (-28), 6. Clarke (-79), 7. Sleightholme (-87), 8. Metcalf (-97) 9. Hensby (-120). Despite a brilliant performance by the Drinkwater team in Round 7 the Davies team (Geoff Davies, Graham Link, Roger Keane & Paul Cutler) were still way ahead of the rest of the field in the overall result such was their lead by the end of Round 6. 3 members of this Shelley team are in the team presently at the top of the County League division 1. Many thanks to David for directing and taking the picture and for Terry for all the hard work organising.
A good time was had by all - report and pictures following shortly when webmaster has a moment or 200! Lovely hotel (with interesting layout), great organisation for the bridge sessions (what a lot of work David puts in) and so much to see in the surrounding area.
The Mixed Pairs club championship was played with a double hesitation Mitchell movement on Thursday 28th March, the winners were Beryl & Michael with Linda & Paul second and Deirdre & Michael third. Congratulations all. Thanks to Terry for directing and David for scoring. Apologies from the webmaster who perhaps did not sufficiently highlight the competition and the need to sign up in advance - will try to do better next time!

Put the date in your diary and watch this space for news. The plan is that Andrew will be giving a morning and afternoon seminar at the Stone House Hotel (same venue as last time). If you haven't already been to one of Andrew's master classes they are not to be missed. Tickets will be available from Kath Adams but as yet the programme has to be finalised.
This competition, previously the Bearn, was held at Wolverhampton Bridge Club. The top pairs are entitled to enter the National EBU Corwen competition 1st/2nd June and well placed pairs may represent the county at the Edgar Foster Cups in September in Warwickshire. Sadly only one SBC player took part this year.
Robin's class at Stafford was well represented at this event in 2019 with five out to the 12 SBC players taking part on Thursday 21st February. Two others who used to play on Friday evenings also played coming 2nd EW. Best placed was Friday morning pupil, Carl, from Paul and Terry's group coming 2nd NS but won a prize for best placed runner up with 58.14%. Carl was playing with ex-teacher Ann who took the beginner's class at Stafford in the Autumn.

Stafford Bridge Club is located at the back of the Grandstand on the County Showground, ST18 0BD (Ordnance Survey ref: SJ 958 053). This "Staffs & Shrops" EBU affiliated club meets regularly throughout the year except during the County Show etc on Tuesday, Thursday & Friday evenings (7:00 for 7:15 p.m.) and Monday & Wednesday afternoons (1:15 for 1:30 p.m.). Click here to see the draft new Constitution agreed by the Club Committee, which will be presented to the Club at the AGM for formal approval, subject to final editing and formatting. Between now and the end of March 2019 Club members will have the opportunity to peruse the draft and to pass any relevant comments on to the Committee. The substance of the text follows closely the model Club Constitution prepared by the EBU. The Committee will therefore be reluctant to further revise the text in any significant matter, unless compelling arguments are presented towards doing so. At the AGM, the proposal will be that the draft new Constitution, as then presented, be adopted as the Club's new Constitution. No supplementary motions will be allowed.
