| BRIEF HISTORY OF SPEYMOUTH BRIDGE CLUB |
In the summer of 1978 a group of bridge enthusiasts decided to see if there was enough interest in the Speymouth area to start a bridge club, and an advert, paid for by Martin Borrell, appeared in the “Northern Scot”. Indeed enough people did appear at the meeting in the “Gordon Arms”, Fochabers and the club’s first officials were:
- PRESIDENT: Martin Borrell, an exciseman who had retired to Garmouth and was well known in bridge circles far and near.
- SECRETARY: Jim Will, also an exciseman
- TREASURER: Adam Borthwick, a retired newspaper man
The more experienced players paired themselves up with less experienced partners as they recognised that this was the best way to improve the playing standard and to increase the membership. It was not long before the club attracted members from Elgin, Keith and Buckie as its reputation for friendly competitive bridge became known.
A team was entered in the Moray Bridge League and eventually the club had enough members to run three teams to compete at the various levels as well as a team in the Banffshire League.
For many years the club continued to meet at the “Gordon Arms” on Thursday evenings from October to the end of March. Summer bridge was enjoyed at The “Mill of Tynet” until a change of management moved the summer club to the “Gordon Arms” as well. Over the years changes forced the club to move to the “Grant Arms” in Fochabers and then back to the “Gordon Arms”. Finally in 2004 the club found its present home in the Christie Room at the Fochabers Public Institute.
The club has been funded through subscriptions and contributions from team members. Members have been generous in helping with major expenditure including Nan Tombe who, with her sister Janet, ran coffee mornings in their home when new tables were needed.
Silver cups and trays have also been donated to encourage competition:
- Club Championship Cup: donated by Martin Borrell. (Originally for aggregate but now for match pointed pairs)
- Club Championship Runners-up Plate: donated by Dorothy Smith
- Cowie Cup: donated by Bill Cowie for Aggregate. He was a Buckie loon who retired to his home town from a lecturing post in Glasgow. He had been in a team which won the Gold Cup.
- Ladies Pairs Tray: donated by Muriel Smith (after the sponsorship of the Empathy Ladies Pairs was discontinued)
- Gents Pairs Plate: donated by Dorothy Campbell, so that the gentlemen didn’t feel left out!
- Hamish Smith Trophy: donated by Muriel Smith for Teams in memory of her husband.
♦ Thanks to Mabel Rennie for her recollections

| Scottish Mini Bridge Rules |
SCOTTISH SCHOOLS MINBRIDGE RULES
Liz Sharp is teaching Mini Bridge in school and would like to encourage us to teach our children/grandchildren
Here are the rules..........
- POINTS
Starting with the dealer everybody calls out their high card points going around the table in a clockwise direction
- THE CONTRACT
The side with more than 20 points plays the hand
The player with the higher number of points becomes declarer, his partner is dummy
The other side are the defenders
Dummy lays down his hand face up in columns which each contain one suit.
Declarer states whether he will play in a particular suit or no-trump. He also states whether he will play in a part score or in game.
For the purposes of mini bridge a part score is always 1 of a suit.
- OPENING LEAD
The defender to the left of declarer makes the opening lead.
- SCORING
Declarer gets a 300 or a 500 point bonus for making game and 50 point for making a part score.
If he fails to make his contract he loses 50 or 100 points for each under trick.
