PAIRS' LEAGUE 2019
ONE MORE PAIR REQUIRED.
The sixth season of the Pairs League starts on Friday March 8th at Woolavington.
For those who havent played before this is an event in which pairs play against a set target score with results imped as in a teams' game. Pairs are placed into divisions so are guaranteed to be playing only against others of similar ability and so there is nothng to be feared by less experienced players wishing to have a go. Last year we had four divisions and 24 pairs in total.
Pairs play 2 x 12 board matches on each of 5 evenings the other dates being Friday March 22nd (Woolavington), Tuesday April 2nd(Woolavington) Wednesday April 10th (Cossington) and Thursday April 18th (Cossington) with all matches starting at 7pm.
Closing date for entries is Friday February 22nd, entry is open to all and costs £25 per pair for the whole event.
You can enter by clicking here.
The Terry Girdlestone Cup is awarded to any SCBA member in recognition of their work in promoting bridge at their club. This may be in an administrative capacity, setting up programmes and teaching people to play the game. Also, for being role models showing exemplary behaviour at bridge. Any nominated last year who did not win the trophy may be nominated again this. The cup will be presented at the County AGM at Woolavington on Sunday, May 26th, and nominations to be received by the end of April.
Please send nominations to Sheila Coda. Email address: firstname.lastname@example.org or by post to Stags Head Bungalow, 4 Highbridge, Williton, Taunton. TA4 4RN.
We all know that there is an existential threat to the game of bridge nationally because of the demographic of clubs and a lack of strategy in many cases to deal with the issue of members being lost at one end of the scale and not being replaced at the other end.
In an attempt to reverse this trend in Somerset we have appointed Gina as our membership development officer whose primary roles will be
a) To persuade clubs to join with the SCBA in this development programme.
b) To support those clubs joining the programme.
c) To increase club membership in clubs by the introduction of teaching programmes, recruitment strategies and generally enhancing the club experience.
Gina will be contacting all EBU clubs and you can see Gina’s profile and contact information here.
Somerset is supporting the EBU's membership development campaign which you can read about here.
FAST FORWARD TO BRIDGE
Go from classroom to club in one weekend of fun lessons and play
This course is for those who know nothing or little about bridge but are keen to learn this intriguing game to a point where they can enjoy playing in friendly competitions at local clubs.
It has been demonstrated that this is one of the most effective methods of learning bridge.
Saturday March 16th and Sunday March17th, with a FREE preliminary introduction for absolute beginners on the Friday evening. Click here for details.
THIS COURSE IS NOW FULL BUT I AM KEEPING A WAITING LIST IN CASE OF NEED.
Join us for a weekend dedicated to Bridge - March 29th -31st– both singles & pairs welcome. Seminars will be relevant to all forms of the game but with an emphasis this year on Duplicate Pairs. Another event organised by the SCBA open to all bridge players.

Please complete this form to include your email address in future county email communications. If you are currently receiving emails from the county there is no need to fill out this form.
It has been decided that we shall no longer use polystyrene or plastic cups at county events. Refreshments will of course continue to be available but players should bring their own cup if they wish to have a hot drink. This will apply at county league and pairs’ league fixtures.
Congratulations to Joe Melmoth and Eve Dent on winning the Michael Coda Cup for 2019. There was a large field of over 220 which will result in a good total for this year’s charity.
Please go to the results tab to see the full results.
