| Dummy's Rights |
What is Dummy allowed to do, and what is forbidden? The clue is in the title - Dummy. At its simplest all Dummy should do is play the cards exactly as instructed by Declarer. If Declarer calls for 8 you play 8 (provided it's in Dummy's hand). Even from 8-9-10 where the cards have the same value, you play 8 , not 9 nor 10 . Here's a little more about what Dummy is allowed to do, and what he should not do:
Tricks Won
- Dummy may keep track of tricks won or lost for his own information.
- Dummy may warn other players that they have put a completed trick the "wrong way round" - but not once the next trick has started.
- Dummy must NOT point out how many tricks have been won or lost.
Irregularities
- Dummy must NOT draw attention to an irregularity once it has been committed (until the hand is completed). e.g. If Declarer is on lead but calls for a card from Dummy, Dummy should play that card - it is for the Defenders to point out any error (if they wish to).
- Dummy may try and prevent Declarer from committing an irregularity BEFORE it has happened, but NOT afterwards. If Declarer is about to lead from the wrong hand, Dummy may say something like "Are you not in Dummy?". It is too late once the card has been called for.
- Dummy may try and prevent Declarer establishing a revoke during the play of a trick (but NOT afterwards), perhaps saying "Having no clubs?". NB A revoke is not established until a card is played to the next trick.
- Dummy may try and prevent a Defender from committing an irregularity.
- Dummy may only draw attention to an irregularity once the hand is completed.
Director
- Dummy must NOT call or suggest the Director is called until another player draws attention to an irregularity.
- Dummy may call the Director once another player has drawn attention to an irregularity.
- Dummy may give information when the Director is present, but is NOT allowed to ask any questions.
Other
- Dummy must NOT look at the opponent's System Card during play.
- Dummy must NOT look at Declarer's hand, nor leave his seat to watch Declarer play.
- Dummy must NOT look at any card in a Defender's hand (unless asked to).
- Dummy must NOT ask any questions or make any comments on the hand.
