The Longest Day 2023

As The Longest Day approached, the Santa Barbara Bridge Center players were bringing in donations for the Alzheimer’s Association. Players donated online at the team’s webpage or brought in a check. The team, by the way, is the Santa Barbara Rufnsluffers.

By game day, June 19, the team had accumulated over $8,000. By the end of the week the total was approaching $20,000! This is great news as donations made in support of the Bridge Center’s campaign to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association are matched by one of our players! In the final week, we were helped along in our efforts by Joan Rocco who brought in a sizable check from her bridge friends who have been playing socially as the Marathon Bridge Group. Thank you, ladies!

We had an exceptionally fun day of bridge on June 19 and we have to thank the hard work of Jennifer Royal and Tish Gainey and the local Alzheimer’s Director of Development, Karen Ortiz, for the planning, decorations and good eats that made it a special day. And kudos to our game director, Chris Gillmon, who directed from almost sunrise to sunset with a smile and good humor, and a thank you to Leslie Schneiderman for the yummy cake.

Thanks, too, to all who played in one or more of our four charity games, with special recognition to Mary Kaljian and Linda Bacon, two of our advancing beginners for playing all day! They understood what The Longest Day was all about.

There were, of course, game winners, but we also had winners of the donor prizes, Julie Richards and Mary Kaljian, and several others who won door prizes.

The local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is very grateful for the support shown over the years by our Santa Barbara bridge players. We have formed a bond and the organization is looking forward, with some fun ideas, for next year.

January 2017 - 8 is Enough

13 teams gathered for the Sunday STaC “8 is Enough” Swiss Game. After a tutorial on Swiss Game strategy and scoring from Phil Kaiser, players enjoyed pizza and salad before beginning the game. There were enough teams to make up two sections. In Section A, top honors went to the team of Norma Jean Shaw, Maria Black, Mickey Rosenzweig and John Whittlesey. In Section B, the top winners were Mimi Draves, Jill Bellowe, Jody Shapiro and Perry Shapiro. A fun afternoon was had by all!

2016 Sectional- August 12-14

Our August 12-14 Santa Barbara Sectional welcomed players from throughout California. They came from nearby communities, and from Los Angeles, Fresno, Bakersfield and Santa Cruz.  There were 70 tables of Open players on Friday and Saturday and 60 tables of 499ers on Friday and Saturday. The Sunday Swiss game at the club had 17 tables for the all-day event.  All three days ran smoothly thanks to our director in charge, Scott Campbell, and the great planning and organization of tournament chair, Annetta Patrick.

Once again our club scored with some of the best food on the circuit. Thanks go to Cheryl Miller, assisted by Ann Grassi, and all the members who baked and assembled delicious nibbles.

It was a team effort and thanks also go to: Kathy Drake, tournament assistant; Celia Foss, partnership chair; Bob and Celia Foss, fill-in pair; Set-up crew Phil Kaiser, Jim Edmondson and Ken Muller; Clean-up crew Rick Panter, Dennis Berg, Chuck Patrick, Claude Case, Phil Kaiser and Jim Edmondson and Sunday’s very efficient caddies, Nancy Spelke and Annetta Patrick.

Thank you, Annetta, for a job well done!!!
