INTERMEDIATE CLASSES START JANUARY 5, 2018
INTERMEDIATE CLASSES START JANUARY 5, 2018

The winter season of bridge lessons is upon us. If you know the bridge basics and have never taken an intermediate bridge lesson now is the time.  If you have taken bridge lessons in the past, now is the time to update your information.  All lessons are at the Savannah Bridge Center; 8511 Ferguson Ave, (912) 228-4838 Fridays at 10:00am for $15.00. Each lesson includes time to practice the concepts with an instructor available for questions. Reservations are needed to ensure materials for each attendee.  Either call (912) 228-4838 or sign up at the Bridge Center.

JAN 5 Finesses, When, Why Not and How If you think finesses are a 50-50 chance, this class is definitely for you. You will learn how to avoid taking finesses by discovering better alternatives. If you must finesse, you’ll learn the best way given the situation of that particular board.

JAN 12 Support Doubles and Two-Way Drury (Advanced Intermediate) Are you bidding major suit games that do not make or missing games that others make?  These two conventions help your partnership know if you have an 8-card or 9-card fit which can be critical in determining the right contract level.  With Drury you will learn to determine how strong the third seat opener is. Lesson assumes familiarity with take out and penalty doubles.

JAN 19 Systems After Weak Two Bids Bidding opens with a weak two bid, now what?  You will learn to explore bidding systems you can use after partner opens with a weak two bid and consider competitive bidding approaches when the opponents open the weak two.

JAN 26 Basic Splinter Bids (Advanced Intermediate) What if with one bid you can tell your partner the strength of your hand and shortness in a suit? Splinter bids can.  You will learn not only when and how to use them but also the advantages and disadvantages of adding them to your bidding toolkit. Lesson assumes familiarity with Jacoby 2NT and reevaluating your hand after finding a suit fit with partner.

Your Instructor, Jim Jackson is the author of the critically acclaimed One Trick at a Time; How to start the winning at bridge, designed with the intermediate player in mind. He is an  ACBL accredited teacher and studied under Audrey Grant from whom he learned to present active-participation classes using a hands-on-the-table method.  Recently, his tournament bridge has taken a back seat to his second career as an author of the Seamus McCree series of mystery/suspense novels and to traveling. A snowbird, he calls Savannah home for the cooler half of the year.

"8 Is Enough" Popularity is Growing...Join the Crowd Jan. 20, 2018

Our second "8 Is Enough" game drew a good-sized crowd to the Bridge Center on Saturday Nov. 18.  The appeal of playing with different partners than usual is taking hold and we had 15 teams competing. Because our Holiday Party (click here) will be held on the third Saturday in December (12/16) we will not have an 8 is Enough game until January 20, 2018.  See you then.

The concept is straightforward. Every team consists of four players of varying skill and experience levels.  That is accomplished by assigning a player a value determined by the player’s master point total.  Each player categorized as an “A” player carries a value of 3 points.  Each “B” player counts as 2 points, and each “C” player counts as 1 point.  A team may not have any combination of players whose total value exceeds 8 points. (Hence the name “Eight is Enough”).  For example, a team that has two “A” players must also have two “C” players (3+3+1+1=8).  Each team will then compete in a traditional Swiss team game.

Each player with over 1000 master points is an “A” player.  Each player whose master point total falls between 200 and 1000 is a “B” player.  Each player whose master point total is less than 200 points is a “C” player.  If a player has a question about his/her master point total, the Club Manager or any game director can look it up.

Start putting your team together and enjoy this great new approach to team bridge! For assistance in finding our completing a team contact Tom Roush, our Club manager. t.roush697734@att.net
