Playing conditions for 2017

This year we have a total of 18 tables in play. This exceeds the highest previous playing numbers and so certain revised playing conditions will need to apply to ensure we have an enjoyable weekend that is challenging for all partnerships.

Firstly, with the kind assistance of the Bedfordshire Bridge Association, we will be playing with duplicated boards across the room. This enables us to play the same cards across the field and not worry about board sharing. It also will enable us to have hand layouts available for the inevitable post session post-mortems in the Bar!

Secondly, throughout the party we have a wide range of bridge playing skills. It would be unfair for inexperienced partnerships to spend five sessions playing against County level opposition and would undoubtedly inhibit their enjoyment of the weekend. Accordingly, whilst the whole field will play the same cards, the room will be stratified into two flights, based on the director’s knowledge and understanding of the competences of the players.

Past experience shows that not all partnerships play all sessions. Therefore these conditions will not necessarily apply to the two morning sessions. The Director will take a view before morning play commences and make an announcement at that time. He will reserve the right to seek guidance from other experienced players.

Prizes policy

All of our events have held to the principle that prizes should be distributed as widely as possible amongst the guests. Therefore we will maintain the policy that an individual can only win one session prize over the five weekend sessions. Accordingly, prizes will move down the field should one or more individuals win or place in multiple sessions. This rule does not apply to overall best performers over the weekend.

Evening Playing conditions

Prior to the commencement of the first session, the Director has split the field into two “flights”. Each Flight contains 18 partnerships. For the first event, both flights will play a 9 table Mitchell event. To obtain a one winner movement in each section, the last two rounds will arrow switch at all tables. There will be prizes of wine or chocolates for the winners in each section.

The top 4 partnerships from Flight B will be promoted to Flight A replacing the bottom 4 partnerships from that flight. These personnel changes will take effect for the Saturday night session. For the Saturday night event, play will be as the previous night, a one winner movement in both flights with arrow switches as appropriate.  Prizes will be awarded as appropriate bearing in mind the one win rule in the Prizes policy section.

The top 4 partnerships from Flight B will be promoted to Flight A replacing the bottom 4 partnerships from that flight. For the Sunday night event there will be a change. This will be a one winner Swiss Pairs event across the field for the title of champion pair for the weekend although there will continue to be prizes of wine or chocolates for the winners subject again to the “one win” rule.

Overall Prizes

We will award a prize to the champion pair, winners of the Sunday night event.

For the weekend as a whole, there will be a prize for the individual(s) who bid and make most slams across the 5 events. This will be scored on the basis of 1 point for a small slam and 3 points for a grand slam.

There will be a prize for the best performing inexperienced partnership. This will be determined on the basis of overall performance by a group of 3 “experts” as overall scores are influenced by the promotion and relegation issues referred to in the playing conditions above.

Other prizes will be at the discretion of the organising team
