My thanks to the members of the RDS Bridge Club,  to the Committee members,  to our Tournament Directior and to the staff of the RDS who all worked so hard to ensure that everything was in place on the day.  It was a very successful night attended by 220 bridge players,  and it raised over 8,000 euro for the Friends of the Royal Hospital. Christmas Party - Dec 2015
Christmas Party - Dec 2015

Christmas is the Season of Joy and Goodwill and a time for celebration.  Our Christmas Party was held on the 16th December 2015 in the members section of  the RDS. 66 members attended.  On arrival,  members were greeted with a glass of mulled wine (or soft drink),  before taking their seats for  the chrismas dinner in the Thomas Prior Room -  a fitting venue for the warm, vibrant and festive atmosphere of the evening.  Once again Nick Frewin made the knitted creations that decorated each table and which were raffled at the end of the dinner. From all reports received,  the evening was a resounding success.  Sincere thanks to all the members who attended,  to the catering staff, to Susan Cox and Gerard Whelan and to the Bridge Committee who worked so hard to make the evening enjoyable for us all...... Charity Night April 2015

Our Charity Night held on the 15th April raised €6,600 for the Royal Hospital Donnybrook.  Our sincere thanks to all those members and friends who worked tirelessly on the day to make it such a success.  Our thanks also to the RDS,  to the sponsors and all those who donated prizes on the night and finally to everyone who attended and supported the occasion in any way.

A letter of thanks was received from Josephine Fitzpatrick,  on behalf of the Friends of The Royal Hospital Donnybrook...."As you know,  our aim was to cover the cost of one of two "Functional Electrical Stimulators" required by the Hospital.  In fact,  we  raised sufficient funds to purchase the two units which was a brilliant result and very much appreciated by the Hospital Board....... May I extend heartfelt thanks to the committee for all their work,  to our sponsors,  and to the members who gave prizes,  helped with the morning preparations and supported the evening so wholeheartedly.  It was a job very well done'.... Our Christmas party,  held on the 14th December,  was a resounding success.  60 people attended.  On arrival,  guests were greeted by the President and members of the Committee and offered a choice of refreshments from the bar in the Samuel Madden room.  Dinner was held in the beautifully decorated Thomas Prior room in a very convivial and happy atmosphere and the attentiveness of the catering staff,  especially Brian,  Paul.  Linda and Tara added to the enjoyment of the evening.  Dinner was followed by bridge and a Christmas raffle in the Library,  which for the first time was decorated with a large Christmas tree that contributed to the festive spirit of the evening.   Sincere thanks to all who attended,  to the catering staff and to the President and Committee members for a most enjoyable evening..

Charity Night Wednesday 17th April 2019 in aid of Special Olympics Ireland

Our Charity Night this year will be run in aid of Special Olympics Ireland Eastern Region. They provide year round sports training and competition to over 2,100 people with an intellectual disability.   91 Irish athletes from all over Ireland are currently attending the World Games in Abu Dhabi.  Our money will go towards the training of one athlete, as well as clothing gear for some others.   I chose this as our charity as I have been doing some voluntary work with Special Olympics for a number of years.  I see how athletes thrive by being involved in sport and benefit from the input of many volunteers.  See the link below for further information about Special Olympics:

http://www.specialolympics.ie/

I hope you can all play on the night and support this event.  We also need your help in other ways.

For example:

  1. Take a publicity flier (available at bridge) and ask your friends to come.  Tickets for the bridge will be available at bridge if you want to buy them in advance or take some to sell to your friends.
  2. Donate a prize for the raffle.  They may be brought along to bridge any Wednesday.
  3. Help on the day:  For example, in the morning of the 17th we need help to set up the supper, tables etc.  On the night, we need help to welcome guests, sell raffle tickets, serve the supper, help with tidy up.  RDS staff are there also and are most helpful all day.  Some of our bridge players could help with moving the boards.
  4. Supper:  as last year we ask members to volunteer to bake!  To simplify this, we ask if you could do a tray bake of one of the following:
  • lemon drizzle
  • banana bread or fruit cake,
  • chocolate brownies or chocolate biscuit cake
  • shortbread

If you can help with any of the above, please let me know.

We will have a Sections for Novices and Intermediates.
