The RACV Bridge Club Awards Explained

Each year the RACV Bridge Club has three main awards, presented at the December celebratory luncheon

The Patricia Snowden Memorial Cup

This award is for the best player at the Club for the year, simply determined by the number of ABF masterpoints earned at the weekly sessions, from the first week in February until the second week in November.
Patricia Snowden was a founding member of the Club and played until her death in 2011.   Gerald Snowden, the first president of the RACV Bridge Club, established this perpetual trophy in memory of his wife.   The winner has their name inscribed on the trophy, and receives an inscribed medalliion.

The Sam Ball Memorial Award

Marita McMahon Ball provides this award in memory of her late husband, Sam Ball, who died suddenly on his way to the Bridge Christmas Party in 2009.   This annual award celebrates a Club member who shows excellence in attitude and commitment to the Club and its Members.  The Bridge Club President, Committee, and the Director consult to select nominees and the ultimate winner each year.

The Most Improved Player Award

Teaching and developing new players is an important part of the Club activities.   This award seeks to foster and encourage all of our Bridge students, by acknowledging, and rewarding the most improved player or partnership developing through the lessons and supervised play sessions.

Bridge Club 2023 Awards

The Bridge Club celebrated a successful year 2023 with a good game and lunch on level 17.  Here are the main award recipients ...
The overall best player, and winner of the Pat Snowden memorial cup is Trefor Morgan - pictured here with president Bob House.

The most improved players are Graham Ball and Graham McDonald.   Jo and Murray Linfoot achieved a highrst score of 81% ...

The best score for the Wednesday games was achieved by Alf and Leeron Branicki  (Alf is the invisible one) ...

2022 Sam Ball Memorial Award
2022 Sam Ball Memorial Award

Mary Stoney and Marita Ball with the presentation of the 2022 Sam Ball Award.
Mary was awarded the Sam Ball Memorial Award for her dedication to the RACV Bridge Club Congress.  Mary first proposed to RACV management to hold a congress at the RACV in 2014, and following this the inaugural congress was held in 2015.
There have been follow up, successful congresses since, apart from the Covid years 2020 and 2021.    The 2022 congress, our sixth, was a great success in terms of registrations and positive feedback.
Plans are underway for our next Bridge Club Congress later this year, 2023.

2022 Most Improved Player Award
2022 Most Improved Player Award

In light of the strangeness of the times, our director and teacher, Ben Kingham, decided not to award a single Most Improved Player Award for 2022.
Instead, as recognition of the enthusiasm and regular attendance of the supervised duplicate session, it was decided to award Ben’s lesson group of 2022 with Certificates of Participation.

Herewith the group photo of the 2022 lesson group - left to right are:

Robyn Dowling, Ben Kingham, Graham Ball, Penny Connolly, Elizabeth Loci, Stephen Coupe, Julie Viney, Alison Hyams.
Absent: John Dean and Graham McDonald

Remembering Pat Snowden
Remembering Pat Snowden

Pat Snowden was a bridge player.   She played at the VBA and was one of the original RACV Bridge group that commenced playing at the RACV Club in 1993/94.   Her early partners were Marie Driscoll & Yvonne Jelbart.  Gerald, her husband of 55 years, became her permanent bridge partner in mid 1998.   With foresight, Gerald arranged our affiliation with the ABF and set up the RACV Bridge Club as a full part of the wider Bridge community in Australia.
Gerald was our first Bridge Club president.

Pat  passed away in 2011.  We remember and celebrate each year with the Patricia Snowden Memorial Cup, the perpetual trophy for Best Player at the RACV Bridge Club.

Gerald Snowden

Gerald Snowden is one of the originals of the RACV Bridge Club and with his late wife Pat Snowden was instrumental in establishing the ABF registration (Club 3442) in 2007.

We celebrated his 90th birthday this Wednesday 6th September.
