Poulton Bridge Club entered 4 teams into the Fylde Bridge League for the 2019/8 season. Previous seasons results determined that there was one Poulton team in each of the 4 Divisions. All Poulton teams have now finished all their matches with most of the significant having been decided.
Poulton A had a mixed season. For much of the season, they were in contention at the top of the table. In a very tight division, the odd poor performance slipped them away from the top. Lancaster A won the league with Poulton amongst several teams closely behind. They finished 3rd of 8.
Poulton B was in contention for promotion for much of the season in Division 2, Southport lead from start to finish and the competition centred around who would be second. It came down to the last match, which they lost and narrowly lost out on promotion to Division 1. The finished 4th but that was only 4 points away from promotion. The performances were generally good and show promise for next year.
Poulton C was the stars of the Show! They won the Division by 27 points which represents a match and a half in hand. The team was Shirley Dobson, Alun Williams, Peter Young, Jonathan Thompson, Ken Dugdale, Paul Dunston, Eileen Johnson and Guy Benson in the main, with the occasional substitute. The team have been consistently good all season and deserve the congratulations of all. They can look to a different set of opponents in Division 2.
The D team is comprised of mainly inexperienced players. As the season went on their performances were noticeably better. Despite finishing 7th of 9, there is much to be optimistic about in their performances. In the main the team comprises of inexperienced league players who are gaining valuable experience in this league. Continued progress should see them rise up the table.
Each of the Divisions contains 8 or 9 teams from different clubs, All the clubs are within 1 hour travel time from Poulton. Each team has no more than 4 away matches over a period of 6 months (September to March). Many see the teams matches as a valuable source of experiences to improve their game. Each year in the summer, PBC goes through the exercise of determining the members who wish to play and how many teams we can support. If members fancy having a go in the Fylde League make this known to any club official and we can include them in the team squad. Who knows, with sufficient number we could get a 5th Team!
Many congratulations to Judith Dorrity who was the winner of the competition.
An enjoyable evening of 8 tables in this event.
Congratulations to the winners: Clifford Haigh & Denise Whitmore
The Runners Up were: Mike Tomlinson & Barbara Forsyth
Len Macauley & Albert Fagan
