Welcome to Pinner Bridge Club

We are a thriving and successful Bridge Club situated in the picturesque and historic village of Pinner in North West London. The club was established in 1936 and we have members at all levels. Some are early beginners, while other of our members have succeeded at the very highest levels in National Competitions. Some prefer a quiet Club night with their friends, while others seek the more competitive competitions run by Middlesex and the surrounding counties.
The Club runs Duplicate, Rubber Bridge, Bridge Lessons and Gentle Duplicate sessions.
Visitors and new members are always welcome.

West leads 7 against 3NT.  You play low from dummy and East plays 2.  How do you plan to make your contract?

You may be tempted to win the first trick with J.  If you do you will probably be defeated.

You have 6 top tricks, and can make your contract by establishing diamonds.  But with so few high cards in dummy, you must be careful to force an entry.  Win the first trick with A!  Then play A and another diamond.  Whenever the opponents win their K, you will be able to get to dummy's clubs, as you have Q 10 in dummy, and J 4 in hand.

If you won the first trick with J, you will never get to dummy again, as West will automatically play low when you play A, and play K when you lead a low club.

South becomes declarer after opening with a strong 2 - which shows 8 playing tricks.

You lead A, your partner plays 5, while declarer plays 3.  What do you play at trick 2?

You know from the bidding that declarer has 8 tricks.  If you now cash K you will be setting up dummy's Q, which together with A, will be 10 tricks.

Your partner played 5 at trick 2 which was a low card - Low to Discourage, so you must not play another spade.  If you decide to shift to a club, your strongest suit, you can set up a club trick before declarer can discard it on Q.

If partner had played a high spade at trick 1, that would have been encouraging - which would have to be a doubleton spade, as Q is in dummy.  In that case you would have continued with spades and given partner a ruff.

Scoring Events Where Different Numbers of Boards are Played

There are different scoring options possible in duplicate bridge where players do not all play the same numbers of boards.  This sometimes happens in a two-section event.

At Pinner Bridge Club we have recently decided to adopt the Neuberg formula, which is generally believed to be the fairest.
