Competitions - Rules and Conditions
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS
The Championship Pairs is, as the name suggests, the most prestigious Club Competition and the winners are presented with a magnificent cup to retain for 12 months. The cup was generously donated to the Club by John and Jill Williams.
1. There will be 24 qualifying events commencing the first week in April and the Trophy will be presented at the AGM. Pairs will be ranked in order of the accumulation of their best 11 weeks percentages and must have played a minimum of 11 matches in the qualifying period.
2. The Championship Pair will be the pair that is in first place at the conclusion of the qualifying rounds. In the unlikely event of a tie between two or more pairs the average of the weekly scores that comprise the ladder will be re-calculated fully and not rounded to two decimal places. If that still produces a tie the competition will be extended on a weekly basis until a winning pair is declared.
3. The winning pair and runners up pair are sponsored to represent the Club in the WCBA Club Championship Pairs event.
4. Masterpoints in accordance with the EBU Masterpoints Handbook (Club Edition) are awarded.
SWISS PAIRS
Twice a year we hold Swiss Pairs events, which are "open" events and great fun. Visitors are particularly welcome to join us. See our Calendar for details. The winning pair receives a small prize. In the event of a tie for first place, the final rankings for the purpose of taking the prize will be decided by adoption of the following in order until the winning pair is found:-
1. if the tied pairs have played each other, the result of that match
2. the pair with the most victories
3. the number of maximum scores (or highest scores if no maximum achieved by either pair)
4. a cut of cards
MICHAEL FAREY TROPHY
The Michael Farey Trophy is an annual competition in memory of Michael Farey, a founder member of the Club.
1. The Michael Farey Trophy is a Handicap Pairs event with the winners being decided after application of handicap scores. The Handicaps will be calculated using a players NGS ranking.
2. A partnership without a handicap will be ineligible to win the Trophy.
3. The competition will be held on a normal club night in February.
4. Masterpoints will be awarded for the normal club evening result but no masterpoints can be issued for the Michael Farey Trophy event.
5. The Trophy will be presented to the winning pair at the earliest suitable opportunity.
6. Non members are welcome to attend but are ineligible to win the Trophy.
WEIR TROPHY - Teams of 4 Competition
Due to the generosity of grandmasters Grahame and Sharleen Weir, we hold an annual single session multiple Teams of Four Competition. The winners are presented with the Weir Trophy.
The date of the competition will usually be in July and members should check their calendar of events for precise information. The competition will be decided by net IMP's. In the event of a tie for first place the winning team will be decided by applying the following until a winner is known:-
1. The result of the match between the two tied teams
2. If that fails to produce an outright winner, the winning team will be the team which has the highest number of victories
3. If still tied, the scores of matches against the same opponents will be compared
4. As a last resort, on the cut of the cards.
Teams will NOT be randomly selected - therefore members should team up in good time and appoint a Captain. All teams will be expected to register their entry prior to the actual event by notifying the Events Secretary.
The prize will be presented as soon as practicable after the event.
Visitors are welcome but are ineligible to win the Trophy.
SLAMMER OF THE YEAR
1. The competition will run from 1 January to the week preceding the November AGM each year.
2. Any partnership bidding and making a small slam will be awarded 1 point, any partnership bidding and making a grand slam will be awarded 3 points.
3. Points will be accumulated throughout the year and the winner will be the player or players who have the highest number of points.
4. In the event of a tie, the player having made the most grand slams will be the winner. If the result is still a tie the prize will be shared.
5. No masterpoints are awarded for this competition.
6. The prize will be presented at the AGM.
PAIRS & SINGLES CHALLENGE
Both competitions are only open to members below the rank of Advanced Master. Players cannot win both competitions in the same period and are excluded from both of the following years competitions. From 6 May 2015 the prizes will be awarded to the highest average score achieved by a pair and individual who has played a minimum of 10 matches between February 1st and October 31. Excludes Swiss and Team events
SIMULTANEOUS PAIRS
The club enters some simultaneous events, including the annual Children In Need charity event. Visitors are welcome at these events but we limit visitors to two simultaneous events only. The sponsors of some events can take up to three weeks to confirm / ratify the results and for that reason our own scoring of these events is provisional pending that confirmation.
