West is the Declarer in 4H.
Looking at the hands it’s one off (4Hs+2S+3D) for N/S can take (2C tricks + 1S +1H) =4 tricks.
But North has a difficult lead. Would you as North lead a Spade away from the King, the Ace of Clubs away from an Ace-Queen or a small club, or will it be an apparently safe Diamond?
If North decides on a diamond, then Declarer if given a chance. The QD will fall on the Ace, Declarer tries Hearts and realises he has a loser. He hopes that North has 3Diamonds. He plays the D Ten then another diamond. Then he plays a Diamond back, discards a Club and the contract is made.
No one bid or made this contract on the night

4 Rounds of Diamonds are taken by E/W and South discards 2 Clubs from Declarers hand.
(At this point Declarer counts Ace & King of Diamonds =7pts and can only have the JS making 8pts.
For his opening bid west must have the KH).
East switches to a Club which is won by Dummy with the K. Declarer cashes the AC on which West discards a Spade.

Declarer cashes the KS and plays the QS overtaking with the Ace Spades, noting that East follows revealing that West’s distribution was 5,4,3,1.
Declarer now plays the QC.
If West throws a Heart, declarer throws Dummies 2S and 4 Heart tricks can be taken leading the Ten of Hearts and letting it run if not covered.
If West throws a Spade on the QC, the 8H is discarded . The ten of Heart is won in dummy then the 2S is played
And won in Declarer’s hand by the 4S and another Heart led to win all the Heart tricks and the contract.

What do you as South bid? 2S(?) showing points and a Spade suit.
Or 2NT showing 8+pts with a good major suit
North bids 3NT and South now bids 4Hs and North continues to 6H.
Or is your system better?

The Bidding was N E S W
P 1H 2NT 4H (nb Souths unusual NT shows the minors)
All Passs
South leads his ten of Spades.
North wins with the Ace of Spades and returns a spade. East plays the JS which is ruffed by South,
South decides to play his last heart to avoid leading away from his D & C suits.
East has seen South with 3cards in the majors and because of his NT overcall marks South with two 5card minor suits). By adding up the Diamonds North can only have two so East cannot ruff out the Diamonds.
East wins the Heart lead from North with the Ace of Hearts. East now leads a Diamond toward West’s K
which is won by South’s ace. South returns the KC which is won by West’s ace and East discards a Diamond.
In Dummy, a Club is played and ruffed by East. East cashes the KS and ruffs a Diamond in Dummy.
In Dummy again, a spade is lead and ruffed by East.

Bidding E S W N
P P 1NT 2H
P 3H P 4H
East leads the JC.
West takes the Ace Clubs and returns a club which is won by North.
North needs the Hearts to break 3 – 2 and for West to hold the KD but North must be careful of a potential 4-2
split in Diamonds. To guard against West having 3 Hearts and 4Diamonds, North should duck a Diamond at trick 3. North plays the 2D , East the TD, dummy the 4D and West the 7D.
Seeing the A &K of Spades, West decides to return a Heart which North wins and draws another round of trump. North crosses to Dummy’s AS and takes the Diamond finesse. Cashes the AD and if there is an outstanding Diamond, ruffs the last Diamond in South’s hand. North will lose a trump trick in the end.
