Play Like A Champion at the North American Bridge Championships

Do you have less than 200 masterpoints?

Do you have less than 20 masterpoints?

A special tutorial seminar just for you loaded with information and Door Prizes for Free Nights at the Marriott!

News Flash!  30+ players have signed up but there is still room for more. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact Joan or Bill Goldstein. This will be a great seminar that will improve your bridge.

You too can play like a champion at the North American Bridge Championships (NABC) that are coming to Philly from March 8 to 18. This event is loaded with events for all levels of players from rank beginners up to world champions. Come join the fun, excitement, entertainment, and play in an event perfected for you.

Unit 141 has put together a one-day tutorial for players with less than 200 masterpoints. If you have less than 20 points, it will be especially beneficial for you.

Where:     Valley Forge Bridge Club
When:      Sunday, February 25, 2018 starting at 10:30am.
Fee:          $5.00 which includes lunch at the club
                                   (collected at the door)

The morning session will include:

  • Beginner's guide to the tournament itself and a description of events specifically designed for players with 0 to 200 masterpoints.
  • The Convention Card: what it is for and how it is used.
  • Interaction with the Director: how to let the Director help you during the play and how to respond if the Director is called to your table.
  • The NABC is fabulous for team games. You will receive brief introduction to IMP (International Matchpoint) scoring used for teams events and how the difference between IMP and Matchpoint scoring can affect both bidding and play strategy.
  • A panel discussion by experienced players where you are encouraged to ask any question about tournaments or bridge that is on your mind.

After lunch, the afternoon session will be a very short, all for fun, trial Swiss Teams Match. All attendees will be grouped in teams of four including one member from the panel discussion at each table. Play with your regular partner or anyone there, no advanced preparation needed. You will get real time guidance on how Swiss Teams work and are scored. Again, a great chance to ask questions. This session is expected to last about two hours.

Advanced registration is required and space is limited. You may pay at the door, but email your registration (including ACBL number and masterpoints) to the event coordinators, Bill and Joan Goldstein at goldstein2101@comcast.net.

Door Prizes!!! Besides the great content of this seminar, the NABC Committee is giving away to two lucky attendees two free nights for the first and last weekend of the tournament (March 9-11 and 16-18) at the Marriott Hotel in Center City which is the headquarters for the event. There will be two separate drawings and two winners. All winners must have less than twenty (20) masterpoints.

This will be a fabulous and fun event and will get you ready for not only the big North American Championships but any regional or sectional tournament as well. You will go home with improved bridge skills.

There's plenty to talk about, but let's get a handle first on some logistics.

How do you get to the tournament? All of the events are played at either the Marriott hotel or the Convention Center, which are connected by an indoor path. You can reach either location easily by public transportation--Regional Rail or PATCO. PA residents over 65 can show a driver's license and ride SEPTA within the city for free or Regional Rail for $1! We also have parking deals if you prefer to drive. The Marriott has parking, but The Parkway lot at 12th and Filbert directly across the street from the Marriott will cost you much less at $16/day. The lot at 12th and Walnut will cost $12/day. For either lot, you just park and take a ticket. Then visit our Info desk and get a coupon that lets you exit the lot as the discounted rate. For all the details, check out our website.

Last month, we talked about hospitality and entertainment. There's more news. We are delighted to announce a performance by The Jersey Tenors on Friday, March 9 after the evening session. You will love the music, nostalgia, and moves of this Jersey Boys-style band. You already know to come stroll the Boardwalk right in the Marriott on Sunday, March 11 after the evening session. There will be strolling magicians, photo booths, arcade games, and balloons, as well as all the cotton candy, funnel cake, hot dogs that you can eat.

Then comes The Counterparts, University of Pennsylvania's premiere a cappella singing group, with shows on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday March 14, 15, and 16. You really won't want to miss this entertaining and talented group. The shows will include custom arrangements and lyrics just for us bridge players. The show is free and there is no reserved seating, but you will need to pick up a ticket from the Information desk sometime before the show. You can see as many shows as you like and we expect you'll enjoy multiple showings.

Now to what everyone really wants to know: FOOD! There is free hospitality after the evening sessions, with goodies each night starting on the first Thursday. The hotel will set up concession stands for lunch, but don't forget about Reading Terminal right across the street. And any information you need about dining in Philly can be found on our fantastic Restaurant Guide. Thanks to Ed Kung and Janet Johnson.

Questions? Click here to find out who to contact and how. The local committee is happy to help, so please call or email if you need any help at all.

Half Tables Eliminated Forever

The joint efforts of Mike Giesler, David Rose, and Jay Whipple of The Common Game have made half tables at club games a thing of the past. You can just use two robots from the online website BBO to fill in anytime you have a half table.

The setup and procedure is simple. Upload the day's hand record file to BBO, start a playing table on BBO using those hands, and place two tablets or laptops on one of your regular tables to become your sitout table. When the sitout pair arrives at the table, they play the appropiate hands against two BBO robots. Scoring the hand results is the same as at all other tables - entered into Bridgemates or your standard reporting method.

The experiment has been a big success and the players love it. Interested? Click Here for article that gives all the details.
