More Greetings from The President
More Greetings from The President

Hello again Chris,

We have Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Estonia and Finland to our west - we are heading east and homeward bound so to speak.
We have crossed 'checkpoint Charlie' and are enjoying the beautiful old city of St. Petersburg in Russia.  We travelled here by fast train from Helsinki and experienced the border guard crossing. When we crossed into Russia you could see a noticeable difference in the rural living standards. However once we got into the city we are appreciating the quality of living that seemingly exists here.
We leave for Moscow by train on Tuesday and look forward to seeing the city.
We have attached some photos for you.
South-eastern Iceland was amazing with the many glacial rivers and rocky deserts stretching for many kilometers at a time.
The trip along the Norwegian coast-line with the many fiords and glaciers was an experience all on its own. We now understand why these Nordic countries are so environmentally conscious - they have so much to protect.
The two days we had in the old walled city of Tallin, Estonia wore us out.  We walked everywhere on the cobbled stoned street and were surrounded by street after street with houses dating back to the 15th. and 16th century. What was amazing was the detailed record-keeping for many of the houses.
Australia had not even been discovered and these countries were engaged in massive wars. It is disappointing however to see the effects of Westernisation - namely capitalism - on these countries so rich in heritage.
I hope you enjoy the photos which try to give an indication of some of our travel..
Looking forward to catching up in less than 2 weeks time.
Regards,
John and Maree

APOLOGIES: John Haylock, Helen Tyler, Helen Hardy

MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING: as circulated and on the website were accepted as a true and correct record on a motion by Jan Gamble, 2nd Ruth Spears.

BUSINESS ARISING FROM MINUTES:

  1. Supervised Bridge and Lessons. Helen Tyler reported that the lessons have now finished and supervised bridge will continue on Monday afternoons at the Uniting Church. Attendances have been good.
  2. Interclub Match against Peebles Bridge Club (Scotland) – Wednesday 11th December.  Peebles will send the deal file to Chris who will prepare the hands.

FINANCIAL REPORT:

Treasurer Mary Turnbull tabled her report showing a bank balance of $3,884.88 and moved that the report be accepted. 2nd Jan Gamble.

GENERAL BUSINESS:

  1. Letter from Lakes Entrance Bridge Club asking to borrow tables and side tables for the ERBA Championships in February 2014. It was noted that they asked to borrow them after bridge on Friday and return them on Monday and the question was asked whether they meant to send this letter to Bairnsdale Bridge Club. Chris to contact Julie Farmer to clarify. The committee had no problem with Lakes Entrance borrowing the tables but they would need to be collected after bridge the previous Wednesday and returned by 11.30am the following Wednesday in time for bridge.
  2. Christmas Party arrangements. Committee to be at the hall by 10am on 11th December to set it up for the afternoon bridge session. Ron to assist Bob Moorhouse with the amplifier to go into the Bowling Club. Chris to get shortbread and Christmas cake for afternoon tea – also lollies for the tables. Ruth to organise shortbread for the prizes. As well as the interclub match against Peebles we will also run this session as a charity event for the Australian Bushfires Appeal being promoted by the ABF. We will run a raffle with 2 prizes – 1st $100 seafood voucher and 2nd $25 Coles/Myer voucher. Chris to approach Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance to ask whether they will also sell raffle tickets.
  3. Upgrade to RSL Cenotaph. Ron Wilson moved that we donate $200 to this upgrade, 2nd Francis Langley. Chris to contact Rosemary Morecroft to ascertain where the cheque should be sent.
  4. A meeting of the 3 East Gippsland clubs is to be held on Thursday 5th December to finalise the 2014 Programme Book. Mary Turnbull and Chris Heesom will represent Paynesville. A long discussion was held regarding the timing of the GNOT for Paynesville in 2014 – whether to stick to 2 Wednesdays or try a Sunday.
  5. ERBA have asked for support from Paynesville Bridge Club with regard to the Teaching seminars to be held in 2014. Assuming these sessions will be at Bairnsdale on Wednesday 26th and 27th March, 2014 we have 5 (at least) members who would be happy to attend.

Meeting closed 4.55pm – next meeting 18th December.
