The Weak N/T - 12-14 Pts.
a. The Weak No Trump is a LIMIT BID. A Limit Bid is a bid where you have described your hand within certain bounderies.
b. The Weak No Trump is PRE-EMPTIVE. A Pre-Emptive Bid is a bid that if the opposition wishes to participate in the Auction, they must come in at a level higher than they wish to.
c. The Weak No Trump has Shape. It has Three Shapes. 4-3-3-3 = 4-4-3-2 = 5-3-3-2. That means NO VOID. NO SINGLETON & ONLY ONE DOUBLETON. The "5" in the majority of times will be a MINOR (♣ - ♦) because you don't hide a good five card MAJOR (♥ - ♠) in the ACOL System.
d. The Weak No Trump has an exact Pt count. 12-14 Pts.
e. Because the Weak No Trump is a Limit Bid you don't rebid unless directed by your Partner. (The Responder).
f. WHEN YOU HAVE OPENED ON NO TRUMP. ITS THE RESPONDER WHO CONTROLS THE AUCTION.
BIDS BY THE RESPONDER.
THE RESPONDER MUST ANNOUNCE THE N/T Pt RANGE.
a. PASS. (The Hardest Bid in Bridge). With 4-3-3-3 & 4-4-3-2 shapes with 0 - 10 Pts. Pass. If your Pt count is LOW 0 - 6 Pts. Pass. You can't bid a four-card suit to save your Partner because you may "HIT" a DOUBLETON. With 6-10 Pts the opener will have more than an even chance of making the One N/T contract, so why raise the contract to the Two Level.
b. With 5-3-3-2 shape and having a minimum of FIVE cards & 0-6 Pts you could Bid Two of that suit. This is played as ONE UP- SHUT UP. If you play the Stayman Convention you can't use TWO CLUBS as a weakness take-out. With 6-10 Pts 90% of the time it would be best to PASS because as above the opener will have a better than even chance to make the contract.
c. With 11 - 12Pts.... NO FOUR CARD MAJOR. Bid Two N/T. THE OPENERS RESPONSE. This Bid is invitational and request Partner to PASS with 12 Pts. The Opener with a GOOD 13 Points ( 8-9-10's and/or a GOOD FIVE CARD SUIT) Bid Three N/T.With a Bad 13 Pts (Just top honours and the remaider "RAGS". PASS. The opener with 14 Pts you must bid Three N/T. GAME.
d. With 15-18 Pts and No Four Card Major bid Three N/T.
e. With Five Hearts/Spades and 12 Pts+. Bid the Hearts/Spades at the Three Level. This is invitational to Game either in Three N/T or Game in the Majors. THE OPENER'S RESPONSE. With a DOUBLETON in the RAISED suit you MUST Bid Three N/T and with THREE OR MORE of the RAISED suit YOU MUST BID GAME IN THE DESIGNATED SUIT. (Four Hearts or Four Spades).
f. With Six or more cards in either of the Majors and 11 Pts+. Bid GAME immediately in the designed suit. (Four Hearts/Spades).
g. With a Solid Six Card Minor (AKQxxx) and a minimum of 10 Pts bid Three N/T. This is known as the GAMBLING THREE N/T Bid. The thinking behind this is that you have as much chance of making THREE N/T as THREE of the MINOR. Only NINE TRICKS are required in THREE N/T as against ELEVEN TRICKS IN A MINOR GAME.
h. QUANTATIVE NO TRUMP BIDDING. This bid is for once in a year when you have as the RESPONDER you have a minimum of 19 Pts opposite the opening of One N/T. With 19-20 Pts you raise your Partner to FOUR N/T, this tells your partner to raise the bid to SIX N/T if they are MAXIMUM. (14 Pts). If they have MINIMUM Pts they will PASS. Then every LEAP YEAR you as the responder have 21-23 Pts your raise your Partner to SIX N/T. This will tell your Partner to bid SEVEN N/T if they are MAXIMUM (14 Pts). If they have MINIMUM Pts they will PASS.
DON'T CONFUSE THESE RAISED BIDS WITH BLACKWOOD. BLACKWOOD ONLY OPERATES WHEN YOU HAVE OPENED WITH A SUIT.
