OXSHOTT BRIDGE CLUB

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE FOR 2017 A.G.M.

The Club’s activities for the 2016/2017 year are provided below and any comments or views from the membership at the AGM would be welcomed

I would like to start my Committee Report by saying how much I have enjoyed being Chairman of Oxshott Bridge Club for the last six years and getting to know you all so well.   The one thing I am proud about during this time is the introduction of Bridgemates to the Club which, although a lot of members were doubtful about at first, seem to have now become the normal way to score and has proved a great success.  This of course could not have been done without the help and dedication of Jonathan Spring, Tony Scott and Peter Wardle who do an excellent job and to whom we give our heartfelt thanks.

Membership

At the moment our membership stands at 117.  The most we can take is 120 so we still have three spaces if anyone knows anyone who would like to join us.

Website

After ten years, Eric Austin is giving up being Web Master.  Without Eric we would not have a website so our sincere thanks go to him for all the work he has put into this.  Peter Wardle has agreed to take this over and we wish him every success.  Mike Sadler is continuing to give us endless pleasure at all the unusual items of news and gossip he manages to find which do not appear anywhere else and our thanks go to him also.

Finance

Our Treasurer, Richard Burgess, devotes a lot of time to looking after our money and accounts and we thank him most sincerely for all the work he does.  I believe our average attendance this year is slightly above what we need to break even so that is good news.

Our thanks also go to Jonathan for being our Auditor.  He is certainly a man of many talents handling a full time job as well as dealing with Bridgemates.  We are very grateful for all the time he spends looking after us.

Competitions

Richard Burgess, Philip Duncan, Kevin and Deanne Goddard, having been promoted to Surrey League Division 2 in the 2016/2017 season, finished a very creditable third so many congratulations to them, an excellent effort.

I would like to congratulate Jonathan Spring and John French for winning the Tilling Trophy for the third year in succession.  This is a truly remarkable feat and a great achievement.  Well done to you both.

Our club competition winners’ results are as follows :

Teams:      Winners:            Mike and Sue Sadler, Valerie Jones & Dorothy Steinart

Runners up:       Elisa Money and Mike Mulligan, J. Spring & J. French

Tilling Trophy Winners:    Jonathan Spring and John French

Runners up:      Elisa Money and Mike Mulligan

Individual Winner:              Sheila Price

                   Runner up:        Edwin Jones

As usual, we will be giving vouchers as prizes instead of money which equates to either a year’s free membership or free evenings according to the competition.

Committee

There is one nomination for the new chairman and one nomination for a new Committee member.  If anyone else would like to be nominated, please could you let Janet know.

My thanks go to Janet Kefford, our very efficient Secretary, who has worked tirelessly during her first year as Secretary.  Also to Peter Wardle who has spent a lot of time adopting the new Rules Revision, and to the rest of the Committee without whom your Club could not operate as efficiently as it does.

I would also like to thank our Directors – Eric and Rowena Austin, Alan Hammond, Vernon Morton and Kevin Goddard – for the efficient way they direct us, we are very grateful to them all.

Finally our thanks go to Mrs. Griffiths who comes every week with a cheerful smile on her face come rain or shine and to whom we are very grateful.

My very good wishes go to your new Chairman and thank you all for making my time as your Chairman so memorable.

                                                                                                Gail Norman
