Team of 8 match v Tony MacIntosh' 8

This year's match against Tony MacIntosh' team was on 30th November at the O&C.  We more than made up for last year's loss, winning by 116 IMPS over 24 boards.

The game was enjoyable and friendly, and followed by an excellent supper in the Coffee Room.

This was Michael's last match as organiser, after many years in charge, and a high note to end with.  Many thanks, and congratulations.

The team was Michael Kaye & Bryan Nicholson,  Philip Wood & Paul Russell, Stuart Horwich & Steven Blair, Jon Wittmann & Phil Meats.

The Oxford & Cambridge Club
The Oxford & Cambridge Club

The Oxford & Cambridge Club is located at 71 Pall Mall, London, and is a shortish walk (5-10 mins) from Trafalgar Square or Green Park (the no 9 bus from there stops outside the door).

There are monthly Interclub duplicate pairs evenings, usually on the second Wednesday of the month (see Calendar).

There is also rubber bridge every Thursday afternoon starting at around 1.30pm.  Club stakes are £1 per 100. Why not meet up with some of the other players over a club table lunch (members only and guests only*), which is very good value at £14 for two courses including wine)?

The Club plays competitive Teams of 4/8 or 12 matches against several other St James's Clubs and participates in various London League and Cup events. In addition, there are annual events against the Oxford and Cambridge Alumni Bridge Associations.

The Club also hosts and directs the Varsity Bridge match in early March each year.

Dress code: Jacket and tie, commensurate for women. No denim or trainers, please.

* If you wish to become a member, the qualification required to join is a recognised academic qualification from Oxford or Cambridge University. Further details may be obtained from the Membership Secretary.

O&C win the 2016 Devonshire Cup

The O&C has won The Devonshire Cup, the prestigious rubber duplicate knock-out tournament between the the London clubs.
In the final the O&C beat the Polish Club, the previous year's winners, by 1190 points (aggregate scoring). Although the tournament has been in existence for well over sixty years this is only the second time that our club has triumphed.
The winning team was Michael Kaye, Graham Osborne, Paul Russell and David Williams.
This year we entered two teams for the first time. Our other team reached the final of the Plate, but were beaten there by Roehampton.
The team was Peter Lennon John Salter, Ian Coleman, Steven Blair and Stuart Horwich.

Teams of 8 Match against MCC on 19th October 2016

The MCC came to us for a most enjoyable and social match.  They won convincingly, but charmingly, by 66 IMPs.

One flat result came from an exciting hand that went 1 - 5 -5 - ?

You are Green against Red, have 10HCPs, 4333 shape including Q82.  I raised to 6 , and LHO bid 6 , passed out.

That was a mistake, as 6 was cold for 1430.  A sacrifice of 7 , inevitably doubled, was called for.  We would have made 8 or 9 tricks, for 8 or 12 IMPs difference.  We could argue that we hoped 6 might fail.

The team was Michael Kaye/Terry Chapman, Jon Wittmann/Phil Meats, Malcolm McIvor/Peter Lennon and Jim Hemsley/John Salter.
