| 2014 Annual Congress Announcement |
|
The next OUABA congress will take place on Friday to Sunday, 12th to 14th Sept 2014 at Worcester College, Oxford.
The main centre for the congress will once again be the Linbury Room, a light and attractive single storey new building with views over the Worcester College gardens. Rooms have en suite facilities, though slightly cheaper, standard, rooms are also available. There is very limited parking at the college and priority will be given to those with disabilities. Please let the Treasurer know when completing the Registration Form if you wish to apply for one of the limited number of parking spaces.
Charges
Click the item in the panel on the left for information on charges for the Congress. (This gives the 2013 prices, there may be some inflation). There will be a 'very early bird' discount for those who pay their deposit by Dec 31st, and normal early bird discount for those who pay by May 31st.
There are very favourable terms for current students of the University, and the Treasurer encourages you to contact him directly to enquire.
Programme
We shall be holding our main event, the Alumni Pairs Competition, on Saturday afternoon and evening, with an interval for Dinner in Hall. The rest of the weekend will comprise the Worcester Pairs competition, Part 1 of which will be on Friday evening, and Part 2 will be on Sunday morning. Saturday morning will be either Teams of 4, or an educational seminar. More details will be set out in the programme Programme. We are trying to keep in touch with members by e-mail so, if you have not already done so, please give Phil Meats (philip.meats@btinternet.com) your current e-mail address and let him know if you change it.
The Committee look forward to welcoming you at the 2014 Congress. Playing and non-playing guests are most welcome and students enjoy reduced rates. If you would like to join us but do not have a partner please do not hesitate to come, the Committee will be pleased to find a partner for you. We have found that the best way of publicising the Association’s events is by personal contacts, so please tell your bridge-playing friends about the Congress. The Committee wishes to encourage all those who would like to participate in any part of the weekend to join us.

| Match v Oxford University 2013 |
|
This year the OUABA enjoyed a match against current university members,
held at the Oxford Bridge club. All the OUABA representatives were recent
graduates (within the past 5 years) which gave the event a good sense of
rivalry. The match was reasonably steady, but with the usual swingy boards,
until at the end we were pipped to the post when a university pair accidentally
stumbled into a making grand slam in the last set. C'est la vie! A joint meal
out was enjoyed by all afterwards. The OUABA pairs were:
Rob Dixon & Emily Middleton
Alan Hayward & Gerhard Dijkstra
Niall Igoe & Ambrose Holmes-Mackie
Rasool Somji & Aleksandar Lishkov |

| Roger Van Noorden |
| We are deeply saddened to announce the death of our Treasurer Roger Van Noorden on 12 April 2010, after a short illness. He will be greatly missed, no more so than by our Chairman John Deech with whom Roger played both in the 1960s and 1970s and when they returned to competitive bridge about four years ago. The Commitee send their condolences to his widow Sally and to his children. John Deech's wife has written about Roger and members might wish to read her piece at http://lordsinpurdah.wordpress.com/2010/04/23/a-quiet-don/ |
