Club Competition Rules

Three competitions are held during each Club Year.  These are the Rose Bowl, Ken  Collins Cup, and the Millenium Shield. In each case the competition is won by one Pair. The following explains the rules for each of the competitions.  These rules were last updated by the Committee on The 2nd August 2016.

Rose Bowl

This is played for in all masterpointed events in the club year, including UK National events, but not the Ken Collins Cup. The club year usually comprises 28 events, but for various reasons, such as bad weather and the date of Easter Monday, the number may be less than this. The trophy is awarded to the pair with the highest % score averaged over their best 16 events. Thus only those pairs that have played in at least 16 events qualify for this competition. Should the number of events in the club year differ from 28, then the number of qualifying events will be altered by that difference.

Masterpoints will be awarded by the club for all qualifying  Rose Bowl events and the Ken Collins Cup. Masterpoints earned in  National events will be awarded only by the organiser of these events (e.g., EBU, SBU, ECATS etc).

Ken Collins Cup.

This Cup is normally played for on the Monday prior to the AGM. It is awarded to the Pair who have the highest % score after handicap, using a movement that provides only one winner (eg by arrow switching in a Mitchell movement  or by using a Howell Movement).

The handicap to be applied is obtained from ALL masterpointed events during the club year held prior to the Ken Collins Cup event. Handicaps are calculated on a pairs basis, the partnership having played in a minimum of 10 masterpointed events. All present at the event will play. However those partnerships that do not qualify for a handicap, and those with a handicap of -14 or less, cannot win the Cup.

Millenium Shield

The Millenium Shield is presented to the Pair who have shown most improvement from the previous season. It is calculated by subtracting each Pair's average %score as calculated for the Rose Bowl in the current season from the preceding season’s average.

Thus only those Pairs who qualified for the Rose Bowl in successive years are eligible for the Millenium Shield.
