Weekly Report - 19 October 2016

The new partnership of Dave & Sandy look as though they could give the established top two pairs a run for their money with a narrow victory of 4 match points over Mike & Leslie.

Mike & Leslie taking the Handicap prize tonight.

Everyone made all 13 tricks on Board 11, with 30 HCP and 2 Kings missing only Roger & Dennis bid up to 6.

Board 14 was another big hand but with only 29 points and a dodgy Heart suit only Bunty & Jean bid 6NT and must have put a good squeeze on to make all 13.

The most interesting hand was probably Board 23, East must have thought they were going to be playing in a big contract with 14 HCP and a 6-5-1-1 distribution. With everyone vulnerable, South started with a Pass, West only had 6 HCP but the 7-5-1-0 distribution had 7 potential tricks and could open 3 Spades. and this gave North a problem who had opening points and 7 Diamonds.

Whether North overcalls 4 Diamonds or not, East is now also in a dilemma with only a small singleton in Spades & Diamonds and must be sorely tempted to bid 4 Hearts but, trusting that partner is pre-empting using the "Rule of 2 and 3", with 4 quick tricks should support partner and could even bid up to 5 Spades.

2 tables played in Spades and made 12 tricks while the other 3 played in Diamonds and made 9 tricks.

As it happens, 6 Clubs is a lay down for EW but is unlikely to be found if West opens.

Inter-County v Shetland - May 2016
Inter-County v Shetland - May 2016

24 Orkney bridge players made the trip to Shetland to take part in the 10th annual Inter-county competition, with Shetland having won the last 2 meetings and leading the series 5-4 Orkney hoped to come away with a victory.

36 boards were played over 2 sessions on the Saturday afternoon and unfortunately Shetland gave us a thrashing to extend their lead.

Saturday evening was the Pairs Competition and with 22 pairs playing 24 boards, Orkney regained some pride with Davie & Mike continuing their good form to take the Cup.

Sunday was the Teams of Four Competition, this event has generally been won by a Shetland team but the biggest cheer of the weekend went up when the winners were announced as Orkney's Margaret & Linda and Katherine & Pat.
