Weekly Report - 20 Sept 2017

20th Sept

The first week of the new season and last years winners Davie & Mike got off to a flier, winning with 70%, Graham & Sheila coming second ahead of Michael & Leslie.

There were no obvious slams but single pairs did bid slams on boards 10, 13, 16, 20 & 22, only Davie & Mike and Graham & Sheila were successful. The slam on board 22 should not make, West opens showing a powerful hand and North with A Q J of hearts should feel fairly sure that they are on top of the K and so should not lead that suit.

Success in Match Point play is mainly due to making the extra trick, when Dummy lays down their hand you should take some time to plan your play, look at where you can avoid any of your losers. This is commonly done by ruffing but if you have long side suit, even a weak 5 card suit can often be established to allow you to discard one or two losers.

Defenders, when they can see Dummy has long side suit should try to stop it being established, look at what entries Dummy may have. Hang on to your 4-card suit if you can, Declarer often hopes the defence will throw one away leaving them a winner.

Board 16 is a good example, in the 4S contract (6S by G&S) Declarer can count 4 losers in their hand, 3 diamonds & 1 club. You should be able to avoid all 3 diamond losers!!!

Inter-County 2017 - 13th to 14th May

15th May 2017

"Orkney Expected ..." and Orkney delivered.

47 players took part in this years annual Inter-County match against Shetland although it was unfortunate, that due to sad circumstances, Shetland came to us with a slightly depleted team but, after a run of 3 defeats, Orkney had high hopes to do well in this years contest.

The first event was the main Inter-County Team match, 7 Orkeny pairs each playing 36 hands against the 7 Shetland pairs. The first session of 18 hands went well, Orkney coming out with a very comfortable lead of 3000 points, the second session didn't go quite as well but the team finished with a winning margin of 4450.

The evening Pairs event had 22 pairs competing, playing 24 hands, and Orkney had another resounding success with the local players taking the top 4 places, Davie & Mike with 60% in third place and Graham & Dave in second with 65.8% while the new partnership of Dave & Sandy lifted the Stewarts Rum Cup with 70.4%. Obviously, you need to be called David to succeed in this game !!

Sunday morning was free for some R&R before starting again for the Teams of 4 match, 11 Teams playing 30 hands over 2 sessions. Once again Orkney came out on top with Michael & Bruce and Jim & Clinton winning by just 3 points over Mike & Davie and Dave & Dave. Obviously the Daves don't have much staying power !!

Unusually for computer generated hands, there were only 4 small slams bid and made out of the whole 99 hands in play.

Once again it has been a hugely enjoyable weekend for all, this was the first time in 11 years that there was a clean sweep of all the trophies. Shetland may be returning empty handed but they have 6-5 lead in the Inter-County and I'm quite sure they will be looking to extend that when we visit them next year.

2017 Norvite Simultaneous Pairs

This annual event saw 14 Scottish clubs with 152 pairs competing over the week around the 18th January, Dounby Bridge Club organised the Orkney entry and had 5 tables.

The event is run with 2 winners, 1 for the pairs playing as North/South and the other for the pairs playing East/West.

Congratulations to Davie Aim & Dave Higgins who came first in the East/West pairs and Iso & Malcolm Tipler who were the best of the Orkney North/Souths coming 15th overall.

Inter-County v Shetland - May 2016
Inter-County v Shetland - May 2016

24 Orkney bridge players made the trip to Shetland to take part in the 10th annual Inter-county competition, with Shetland having won the last 2 meetings and leading the series 5-4 Orkney hoped to come away with a victory.

36 boards were played over 2 sessions on the Saturday afternoon and unfortunately Shetland gave us a thrashing to extend their lead.

Saturday evening was the Pairs Competition and with 22 pairs playing 24 boards, Orkney regained some pride with Davie & Mike continuing their good form to take the Cup.

Sunday was the Teams of Four Competition, this event has generally been won by a Shetland team but the biggest cheer of the weekend went up when the winners were announced as Orkney's Margaret & Linda and Katherine & Pat.
