Weekly Report - 22nd February 2017

Congratulations to Linda & Christine on their win this win, well ahead of Jim & Clinton with a tie for third between Graham & Dave and Michael & Leslie.

Board 17 had a relatively balanced 32 HCP which is a bit on the tight side for a slam in no trumps but the 5 card club tipped the scales for 2 pairs who bid 6NT and another bid 6S, in both cases it needed one of the missing KQ clubs to be with South. Everyone made 12 tricks.

Similarly, Board 23 had 31 HCP with a 9-card heart fit, 3 pairs were in 6H while another was in 6NT. The AS and KC were missing, the spades were weak with the K & Q split so there were potentially 2 losers in that suit and club King could be a loser. The fourth diamond gave you a discard so you could throw off from your doubleton clubs but would then need to make 2 of the spades or you could throw off the third spade and hope the club finesse works.  The opening lead could make all the difference although as it happens the King is finessable.

Against 6NT it is not a good idea to lead an unsupported Ace, they have bid the slam with an Ace missing so they are hoping to make it on their smaller honours, in this case the opening AS lead guaranteed them the contract.

Leading an unsupported Ace is usually a bad lead in any contract, on Board 10 it gave the opponents the top score.

Declarer has to get into the habit of identifying the losers and working out a plan to avoid them. On Board 10 most were in 4S and you can count 5 losers in West's hand:  the QS, AH, 2 small diamonds and a club. You can't avoid the QS, AH and club (unless you get an Ace lead to let you discard it) so you must make the 2 losing diamonds. With East only having the singleton diamond but 4 trumps you should get 2 ruffs in before you play 3 rounds of trumps. Win the AD, trump the 2D, play a small trump back to West's AS then trump the 3D.

2017 Norvite Simultaneous Pairs

This annual event saw 14 Scottish clubs with 152 pairs competing over the week around the 18th January, Dounby Bridge Club organised the Orkney entry and had 5 tables.

The event is run with 2 winners, 1 for the pairs playing as North/South and the other for the pairs playing East/West.

Congratulations to Davie Aim & Dave Higgins who came first in the East/West pairs and Iso & Malcolm Tipler who were the best of the Orkney North/Souths coming 15th overall.

Inter-County v Shetland - May 2016
Inter-County v Shetland - May 2016

24 Orkney bridge players made the trip to Shetland to take part in the 10th annual Inter-county competition, with Shetland having won the last 2 meetings and leading the series 5-4 Orkney hoped to come away with a victory.

36 boards were played over 2 sessions on the Saturday afternoon and unfortunately Shetland gave us a thrashing to extend their lead.

Saturday evening was the Pairs Competition and with 22 pairs playing 24 boards, Orkney regained some pride with Davie & Mike continuing their good form to take the Cup.

Sunday was the Teams of Four Competition, this event has generally been won by a Shetland team but the biggest cheer of the weekend went up when the winners were announced as Orkney's Margaret & Linda and Katherine & Pat.
