Handicap Pairs championship
Handicap Pairs Championship (Grosvenor Cup)

The Grosvenor Cup was originally begun to promote the idea of players playing with others - there was at that time a lot of regular partnerships, the members of which did not play with anyone else. It was played on a series of normal duplicate nights and each entrant to the competition had to play with a fresh partner on each occasion.
This worked for many years but eventually the number of entrants dwindled to the extent that it was becoming unviable. The competition was revamped - it was played on a Sunday and each entrant had to play with three others to give a three session event.
Obviously it was convenient for four players to enter as a 'team' and play with each other.
This modification, in its turn, bit the dust and it was converted to a handicapped event.
The first time (1995) it was a two session event played on a Friday evening. Having given each entrant a handicap, the players were allowed to choose their partner for session one.
For session two the low handicap players were allotted, randomly, a high handicap player.
There was an open event and a handicapped event.
The following two years the event was a straightforward handicap individual.
To try to bring our Wednesday night people into our competitions - they are mostly players who have graduated from our beginners and improvers classes - we introduced a handicapped pairs event played on a Wednesday.

This has now reverted to Friday afternoons.
