Please keep the board in correct position to avoid misboarding.

East, West and South to make sure that North keeps the board centred during the play.

Please aim to be seated prior to 7.25pm.  The director can then set up the movement for a 7-30pm start.

Absent players at 7-25pm risk being turned away.  

If delayed please ring the club before 7-25pm on 01604 717019 as the movement will be laid out to match seated players.

NORTHAMPTON BRIDGE CLUB

 

 

 

COMPETITION RULES 2013-14

 

 

 

THE   CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS for the SPENCER CUP

 

 

 

This is recognised as the club’s major pairs competition, to determine the Club Champions.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members.

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their score will be disregarded. Members placings will be upgraded where relevant.

 

 

 

There will be 7 qualifying heats, played on the second Tuesday from September to March.  Best 5 Rounds to count.

 

 

 

A heat shall consist of at least 24 boards, matchpoint scoring, with one overall set of placings (no N/S, E/W winners).

 

 

 

A pair’s top 5 placings will count.

 

 

 

In the event of a tied placing in a heat, e.g. two pairs finish joint third, then both will receive the average placing, e.g 3½.

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

A player may play with more than one partner, but must play 5 rounds with the same partner for their scores to count.

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

 

 

THE SUMMER PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP, for the DAVIES SALVER

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members.

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their score will be disregarded.

 

 

 

There will be 6 qualifying heats, played on the fourth Tuesday from April to September. (except in 2012, May to October).  Best 4 positions to count.

 

 

 

A heat shall consist of at least 24 boards, matchpoint scoring, with one overall set of placings (no N/S, E/W winners).

 

 

 

In the event of a tied placing in a heat, e.g. two pairs finish joint third, then both will receive the average placing, e.g 3½.

 

A pair’s top 4 placings will count.

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

A player may play with more than one partner, but must play 4 rounds with the same partner for their scores to count.

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

 

 

THE THORNE CHAMPIONSHIP

 

 

 

This is the Club’s pairs competition for non-expert pairs.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members who are meet the eligibility criteria on the 1st of May. The eligibility criteria to be determined by the committee. For 2012/2013 those criteria excludes:

 

          Players with a NGS rank of J or higher

 

          “A” team players

 

          Winners of major competitions in 2011/12 (Spencer/Davies/BeebyGold)

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their score will be disregarded.

 

 

 

There will be 7 qualifying heats, played on the third Monday from September to March. Best 4 positions to count.

 

 

 

A heat shall consist of at least 24 boards, matchpoint scoring, with one overall set of placings (no N/S, E/W winners).

 

 

 

A pair’s top 4 placings will count.

 

 

 

A pair’s placing on the night will be their position within the eligible pairs.  [See below for eligibility criteria]

 

 

 

In the event of a tied placing in a heat, e.g. two pairs finish joint third, then both will receive the average placing, e.g 3½.

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

THE LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP for the NORAH WARD CUP

 

 

 

This competition is to determine the leading ladies pair.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members.

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their score will be disregarded.

 

 

 

There will be 7 qualifying heats, usually played on 7 of the first Mondays from July to March. (Generally the first Mondays in October will be the individual). Best 4 positions to count.

 

 

 

A heat shall consist of at least 24 boards, matchpoint scoring, with one overall set of placings (no N/S, E/W winners).

 

 

 

A pair’s top 4 placings will count.

 

 

 

In the event of a tied placing in a heat, e.g. two pairs finish joint third, then both will receive the average placing, e.g 3½.

 

 

 

A pair’s placing on the night will  be their position within the eligible pairs, i.e all lady pairs.

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

A player may play with more than one partner, but must play 4 rounds with the same partner for their scores to count.

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

 

 

MIXED PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP

 

 

 

This is a two-session competition for mixed pairs, played on 2 consecutive Tuesdays.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members.

 

 

 

Non-mixed pairs may play in the sessions.

 

 

 

This is a two session event of at least 24 boards a session with matchpoint scoring.

 

 

 

The percentages from the two events will be added together to give an overall total.

 

 

 

A  tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

THE ASSOCIATE PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP for the BEARD CUP

 

 

 

This competition is to determine the champion pair from our Associate Members.

 

 

 

There will be 7 qualifying heats held on the third Thursdays, September to March, (exc December, when it may be 2nd Thursday)

 

 

 

Best 5 from 7 placings to count.

 

 

 

Each pair must have at least one associate member.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members.

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their score will be disregarded.

 

 

 

A heat shall consist of at least 24 boards, matchpoint scoring, with one overall set of placings (no N/S, E/W winners).

 

 

 

A pair’s top 5 placings will count.

 

 

 

A pair’s placing on the night will be their position within the eligible pairs.

 

 

 

In the event of a tied placing in a heat, e.g. two pairs finish joint third, then both will receive the average placing, e.g 3½.

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

THE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TEAMS for the BEEBY – GOLD GOBLET

 

 

 

This is the trophy for the Tuesday Night Teams Competition for teams-of-four, to determine the club’s champion team-of-four.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members.

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their team’s score will be disregarded.

 

There will be 6 rounds, played on the first Tuesday from September to February.

 

 

 

Scores from all 6 rounds are to count.

 

 

 

Scoring will be via imps. Imps will be converted to a 20 point Victory Points scale using the relevant conversion table for the boards played, as determined by the EBU and held on the club’s computer.

 

 

 

If a team is absent they are awarded 2 victory points less than the last placed score on the night, or 0 if higher

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

 

 

THE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP for the CORPS TANKARD

 

 

 

This is the trophy for the Monday Night Teams Competition for teams-of-four.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club Members.

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their team’s score will be disregarded.

 

 

 

There will be 8 rounds, played on the second Monday from August to February.  Best 6 positions to count.

 

 

 

Scoring will be via imps. Imps will be converted to a 20 point Victory Points scale using the relevant conversion table for the boards played, as determined by the EBU and held on the club’s computer.

 

 

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

 

 

 

 

THE SCOTT TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP

 

 

 

This is the club’s Teams of Four competition for non-expert teams.

 

 

 

This competition will be part of the Monday Night TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP. There will be 8 qualifying heats, played on the second Monday from August to March. Best 6 positions to count.

 

 

 

The winning team will be the highest placed team, in the Corps Tankand, that contains at least 3 players who meet the eligibility criteria on the 1st of May. The eligibility criteria is to be determined by the committee. For 2012/2013 those criteria excludes:

 

          Players with a NGS rank of J or higher

 

          “A” team players

 

          Winners of major competitions in 2011/12 (Spencer/Davies/BeebyGold)

 

At least 3 team members must meet this criterion on any heat.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members. [See below for eligibility criteria]

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their score will be disregarded. Members placings will be upgraded where relevant.

THE PIVOT TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIP for the RIXON BOWL

 

 

 

This is the club trophy awarded for the Multiple Pivot Teams of Four competition.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is open to Members and Associate Members.

 

 

 

Guests may play in a heat, but their score will be disregarded and their teams matches results will be null.

 

 

 

There will be 7 qualifying heats, played on the fourth Thursday from August to February. (December may be played earlier). 

 

 

 

Depending on the number of teams present and the movement chosen, each player will play a session with each other player in the team.

 

 

 

The maximum number of matches to be played in any heat will be 6.

 

 

 

Scoring will be by imps. In each heat, teams will get 2 victory points for each individual match won, and 1 vp for a draw.

 

 

 

A team’s top 5 scores will count.

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

Substitutes are allowed, but must not be permanent members of another team. [See below for eligibility criteria]

 

 

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

THE WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON COMPETITION for the BANKS CUP

 

 

 

This competition is to determine the best player who can be either a Member/ Associate Member with a National Grading Scheme ranking of 6 or below or a visitor.

 

 

 

The result will be based on a player’s best 8 percentage scores in the season provided that their partner also is eligible for the competition. (i.e. if you play with a higher ranked Member/Associate Member your score that week will not count!)

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

 

 

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP

 

 

 

This is a one session evening event.

 

 

 

Entry to the competition is limited to club members.

 

 

 

A movement should be used to ensure that as many people as possible play with each other.

 

 

 

Match-point scoring is to be used.

 

 

 

A final tie will result in the trophy being shared.

 

 

 

Where a situation arises not covered by the above rules, the Tournament Committee shall make a ruling.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

 

 

 

(i)         Eligibility criteria for the Beard Cup, Thorne and Scott Championships.

 

These competitions are open for players who, at the 1st of May, meet the

 

following criteria (for Scott this applies to at least 3 out of the 4 team members):

 

·        Have an NGS rank of TEN or less

 

·        Do not play for the Northampton A team

 

·        Are not the holders of the Championship Pairs or Teams

 

·        Are not otherwise excluded by the Committee.

 

 

 

(ii)        Team membership and the use of Substitutes

 

A team shall consist of a nominated captain, and at least 3 other

 

registered members.

 

If a substitute is required, then any player not registered with another

 

team may be used.

 

 

 

An unregistered player may substitute for more than one team.

 

A team may “borrow” a spare player from another team, but only with

 

the express agreement of the captain of that team.
