Wrong Hands in Boards!

Please try to put hands back into the right slots.

Follow bridge etiquette.  That is during play keep the board pointing North in the middle of the table. Put the cards back in the right pockets. Don't look at partners hand after play. Also don't look at the boards if sitting out.  Nobody deliberately fouls a board but it is so easy to do if etiquette is not followed.

When fouling does occur then rules and consequences are:

  • The offending pairs (usually both pairs at the table where the fouled board occured) are fined 10% of a top;
  • Non-offending pairs, (these are the pairs where the board is voided because of the foul) are awarded 60% scores each;
  • Non offending pairs (who are effectively unable to play the board) are deprived of or enjoy better scores than they would have got if the board had been played . This deprivation / enjoyment can be more significant than the 10% fine or the 60% award.

So please take care and follow bridge etiquette.

NOISY NEIGHBOURS!

The club has had a complaint about too much noise especially after 10-30pm.  If all players take the simple measures below the chances are that we will finish a little earlier, there will be less noise and bridge enjoyment will be higher.

These suggestions reflect good behaviour at bridge and will benefit everyone.

  • Be in the club by 7-25pm.  Organising the movement is quite complex. A late change runs a high risk of the computer set up going wrong. This leads to further delay in the evening. To get a prompt start the director/ scorer likes to know the plan at 7-25pm.
  • Be SILENT when the director gives instructions.  This cuts out delays when the director is waiting for people to listen – and also cuts out delays when those who are not listening (talking) ask about what is going on later
  • Please don’t look at the cards in the boards at the sit out table – this can lead to mis-boards – apart from the inconvenience, it takes time to sort the board
  • Take special care when putting cards back in the boards – discussing hands and looking at partners hands can lead to mis-boards – with the delay in sorting out.
  • Avoid discussing hands with partner between boards – this takes time and delays the movement – over 24 hands a 20 second discussion after each board is 8 minutes – the can change a finish from 10-30pm to 10-40pm .
  • Don’t argue with partner – unpleasant for partner and unpleasant for the opposition and usually for the rest of the room too. If you can say nothing to partner; partner is talking to themselves.  Avoid having the last word.
  • Don’t get involved with discussions with opponents – this escalates the problem and takes time.
  • Don’t criticise opponents bidding or play- this can lead to unpleasantness and discourages less experienced players from attending.

Overall behaviour in the club is good – however by setting a good example yourself others will follow the same pattern – best behaviour becomes the club culture
