WHARTON TROPHY—LEAGUE— (Presented by Charles Wharton in 1960) - Complete rules will be handed to team captains at the start of a new season, the following are just a condensed version.
Only four players may be nominated and substitutes may only play twice for the same team in any one cycle. (The penalty for playing more than twice will be a score half way between 25% of maximum VPs and the score actually gained on the night—in most cases this will be a higher score than that given when a team fails to turn up). A member of a team may not play as substitute in another team in the same division. Scoring by IMPS converted to Victory Points. Two teams will be promoted and relegated at the end of each cycle and the Wharton trophy will be awarded to the leading team in Division 1. In event of a tie, either for the Cup or for promotion or relegation, it will be split by (a) Net IMPS scored over the cycle, (b) Total matches won/drawn etc. If there are teams waiting to enter the League, there may be a play-off match for teams waiting to enter before the start of the season.
A team may replace one of its members at the end of a cycle without penalty. Any team that replaces a pair at the end of a cycle will drop one division (although this may be waived in very exceptional circumstances). A team that replaces three members shall be treated as a new team and must re-enter in the lowest division.
Four team members must be nominated before or at the start of each cycle by communication from the team captain to the League Secretary. In the absence of such nomination, the team playing the first match shall be taken as the nominal team.
This is an open event although it is run by the Club.
All Trophy Competitions - Although non-members may be allowed to play at the discretion of the Tournament Director, they will not be permitted to play for the Trophy. In all Pairs Competitions, in the event of a tie, the trophy will be shared.
