UNAUTHORISED INFORMATION
Although the Friday club is relaxed and sociable, please remember that we are still playing a duplicate competition and we follow the standard rules for duplicate bridge.
What is 'unauthorised information'? It is giving partner any clues about your hand other than by the bids made or cards played.
It can come from comments, gestures or mannerisms, hesitations, touching a bid card in the bidding box and then passing, etc. Even a friendly comment like 'what on earth should I bid/lead with this lot!' gives partner a clue about your hand (i.e. you have a close or difficult decision!).
I'm certain no-one is deliberately giving each other 'unauthorised information' to gain an unfair advantage. I suspect it's largely to do with the relaxed atmosphere on Fridays. However, to avoid any 'issues' at the table please remember a few things:
1. Don't discuss anything with your partner during the bidding. If something goes wrong, say nothing, continue and try to keep a straight face!
2. Don't touch the bidding box until you have 100% decided on your bid. Sit on your hands if necessary!
3. Avoid flippant comments during the bidding and play. These may give partner clues even if not intended.
4. Be careful of facial expressions and gestures that may give away information.
Thank you!
Leigh
