Jeff's Back o'cards Corner
Problem 4

South was at it again. “Of course 5 clubs makes – Throw the losing spade on the HK, draw trumps and use the CQ and 9 to get to dummy finessing the diamonds for 11 tricks; three clubs, five diamonds, two hearts and one spade makes 11 tricks. Simple” But superficiality has no place in Back o’cards Corner.

Find the defence to beat 5 clubs.

Time to solution:    Kudos points
Less than 10 minutes:  Excellent 20
Up to 25 minutes:   You've beaten the problem setter 10
Up to 1 hours:    OK    5
Up to a week:   You must have retired and have time on your hands 1

You were asked to find the defence to beat 5 clubs. It looks as though there are 11 tricks available and declarer only loses A and K of trumps.

On the SK lead declarer has to throw the losing spade by playing the A and K of hearts. This exposes the declarer to being forced in the majors when he attempts to draw trumps. Although declarer can finesse the diamonds twice when in hand, the AD blocks access to the diamonds when South refuses to cover. Two enforced ruffs when North is in with the A and K of clubs shortens the trump suit and declarer cannot both draw trumps and unblock the AD.

Back o’cards Corner is an unique bridge club. No one there is interested in the bidding, indeed it is unrecorded. At the club there are also mental bonuses [known as kudos points] for perfection. Great kudos is gained for achieving the perfect result – bidding and making the contract exactly and defending correctly. Overtricks are for those fixated on match points. One other quality is required for membership – the ability to see through the back of the cards. Of course since this is a requirement of membership, your opponents are also blessed with this facility. Consequently there is often perfect declarer play allied to perfect defence by the opposition.
