Harvesting on the Island

Once again our Pictou County players have reaped rewards in a sectional tournament.  Continuing on their marvelous winning streak this year, Margaret Ann Dodson and Irene Szabla were formidable in PEI on the weekend.  Winning points in each session, the pair pocketed a cool 8.84 silver points, finishing Sunday with a well earned triumph in the Swiss team game.  Their partners in that event were Charlie Fortune and Doug Walters.  Together the four won 78% of the available Victory points, outpacing the second place team by 109 to 92, losing only their last game after the event had virtually been decided.  For their efforts, Charlie and Doug scored 4.13 silver points during the weekend.  Congratulations to our Club members!!!

Storming the Capital

Saturday May 13 was the A/x and C Grand National Teams District Finals in Halifax.  Pictou County sent 6 of our members to the "C" event, all of whom did very well.  Audrey MacGillivray played with ex-Pictou Countier Melissa Noel while Doug Walters played with Truro's Bob Braedley.  That team squeaked out a one point, last round come from behind victory over the second place team of Irene Szabla and partner Gordon Young who sat East/West while Margaret Ann Dodson and Ron O'Brien filled out the team at North South.  The final score was 97 Victory Points to 96.  In their head to head meeting the Braedley team beat the O'Brien team 11-9 (double their final margin of victory).  It was a fun day of bridge in a friendly atmosphere at the Maritime Cards and Games Bridge Studio.  Congrats to all!!!  The winners will be sponsored as reps of Nova Scotia at the Grnad Nationals in Toronto this July.

Owner Kathie MacNab and her team put together an excellent event.  Results can be viewed at: http://www.bridgestudio.org/Results/2017/2017_05_May/13_GNT_Finals.htm

Members do us Proud

Charlie Fortune and Doug Walters are having a great tournament in Harrisburg, PA.  They had a third place finish in a Pairs event on Wednesday, scoring 4.91 gold points for their efforts.  And they've gotten another 4.05 gold and red in other games they've played there.  They will be back in Pictou County for our May 8 game.

On May 4, Irene Szabla and Doug Roberts teamed up to have a stellar 74.07% game in Truro.  That was just shy of the 75.0% level required to get noted of the accomplishment in next month's ACBL Bulletin.  So...we'll notice it here, instead!!!

Congrats to all four of our members for their great results.

Don Cox Results

The Don Cox Memorial tournament has come and gone for another year, but what a tournament it was.  Our space at the Glengarry was filled every day...great turnout with Truro leading the way.  Lots of people from all over including the Valley, Halifax and the South Shore, North Shore, New Brunswick, and PEI.  Gaye MacDonald did a fabulous job co-ordinating the Truro volunteers while Audrey MacGillivray did the same for the Pictou County volunteers.  Karl Hicks and his crew delivered their high standard of directing.

Many of our Pictou County players made the trip, some for the first time at a sectional tournament.  Congrats to them for taking that step.

Our club's point winners were as follows: Herb Watters - 14.22; Margaret Ann Dodson - 9.07; Audrey MacGillivray - 6.51; Ron O'Brien - 6.07; Kathy Rose - 4.05; and Allan Millman - 4.05.  Audrey Forrest and Allister Fraser would have won points as well had they been ACBL members.  Herb Watters and Pat Scammell had one of the best games at the tournament, scoring over 70% in winning the open pairs.  The team of Margaret Ann Dodson, Herb Watters, Phil Knoll, and Ron O'Brien won, in convinciing fashion, the B level Swiss movement on Sunday.

All in all, it was a great tournament - make sure to put it on your calendar for next year.  In the meantime, get ready for the Sectional tournament in Bridgewater from May 26-28.  That was a fun tourney last year; so it is likely to be wonderful again this year.  Check it out at http://www.unit194.org/Tournament_Descriptions/Sectional_Bridgewater.htm
