Summer Competitions

The month of May sees the start of GCBA’s Summer Competitions.
We have introduced some new formats this year, including an interesting twist to the teams
evenings so you do not need to arrange team-mates. We would also love to see some new players
join us on the county’s Monday night sessions.
There are three separate competitions and you are welcome to come to some or all of these. All the
sessions are open events and there is no requirement to attend every session.

Summer Pairs (May 30th, June 27th, July 25th, August 22nd and August 29th)
A normal pairs evening. The winner of the series will be the player with the highest average over
their best 3 sessions. (You may play with the same partner as many times as you like or with
different partners).

Summer Swiss Pairs (May 9th, June 13th, July 11th and August 8th – SECOND MONDAYS )
Each evening comprises of three 8 board matches using the Swiss assignment method - this means
that each match you play against a pair doing as well (or badly!) as you are.
To win the competition, you will need to maintain your partnership throughout the event (an
allowance will be made if the pair misses a session), but you are welcome to attend even for
individual sessions. Advance notice to ctd@gcba.org.uk, even a few hours before, helps with
running the event.

Summer Teams (June 6th, June 20th, July 4th, July 20th, August 1st and August 15th )
Two competitions for the price of one and a chance to team up with some of the county’s top pairs!
Turn up as a pair and teammates will be drawn on the evening, for a multiple teams format (i.e. you
play the opposing teams and can score up with your teammates).
We hope to have a discussion of interesting hands in the bar after the event.
Additionally, each evening, there will be a pairs ranking on the basis of which individuals will score
points towards their overall series ranking. The overall winner of the series will be the player(s)
with the most pair ranking points over the six sessions, but again you can attend as many sessions as
you wish/are able.
