News 2020
Virtual Handicap two-monthly competitions

Well done to Steve Martin (golf) who has won the first of the virtual handicaps which ran  from 1st September until the end of October for all Tuesday Virtual Club events. This is an individual competition similar to the old Challenge Cup. You'll find it in Competitions 2020. The handicaps used are the current ones based on NGS grades. The 2nd competition November-December has just started.

Well done Lottie!

Newbury Bridge Club's youngest member Charlotte (aka Lottie!) Bedford has been playing bridge for about 18 months and has been in the u16 England squad for about a year. She has played for England in a few friendly matches and events against other countries but on Sunday she played in the Channel Trophy, the most prestigious event so far. At the age of 13, she is one of the youngest members of the team. The England under 16 team came second in a 4 way match  with France first and Belgium and Netherlands 3rd and 4th

Her father Stephen says that it it has greatly helped Charlotte to play both pairs and teams at Newbury Bridge Club and to get such a tough workout!  All the members have helped to make Charlotte the player she is. Well done Lottie!

Children in Need 2020

We raised over £900 for Children in Need. Thanks to all those who contributed to this marvellous total which is 4 times what we collected last year.

Claire Bevan R.I.P.
Claire Bevan R.I.P.

It is with much regret that we have to announce the death of Claire Bevan, wife of Martin who passed away peacefully on Friday 17th April. Martin and her daughter Erica were at her bedside. Claire had been unwell for some time.

Claire and Martin have been popular members of Newbury Bridge Club for many years and our thoughts are with Martin and his family at this time.

Bob Wilkinson R.I.P.

August: We have just received the sad news that Bob passed away, at home, last Friday, after a long and bravely fought battle against cancer. He played Rubber at  Newbury Bridge Club where he was very popular, a true gentleman who everyone liked. Our condolences go to Noreen and the family.

Coronavirus

All meetings of Newbury Bridge Club are cancelled until further notice (except those online!)

And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.

Thanks to Mary Murphy who sent us this poem.

Paul Chappell R.I.P.

We have also been told that Paul Chappell, yet another rubber player, died over the Christmas break. It seems that Paul probably died of heart failure close to the New Year. The cremation service is for family only but there will be a memorial service for Paul at the Friends Meeting House 1 Highfield Avenue Newbury RG14 5DS on Thursday 13th February at 11 a.m.

Gill Kedgley R.I.P.
Gill Kedgley R.I.P.

It is with great regret that I have to inform you that Gill Kedgley passed away on 12th January 2020. Many of you will be aware that she had been seriously ill for some time. Gill had been a member of Newbury Bridge Club for several years playing both at Rubber and Improvers. She was such a positive cheerful woman and will be greatly missed.
The funeral will be at West Berks Crematorium on Wednesday 12th February at 1pm. Family flowers only. Donations to Newbury Cancer Care or Sue Ryder.
