Rubber Bridge

Played every Monday

This is an informal evening with instant prizes for the winners. On the first Monday of the month a charity raffle is held.

   The Florence Hawkins Trophy:-  The trophy is awarded to the pair who achieve the highest score of the year in an individual evening of Rubber Bridge at Newbury Bridge Club.  

 

Championship Pairs

Amy Baker Salver played on the first Tuesday of each month. Winners are awarded the trophy + a shield

The winners are the pair with the best six results with the same partner over the year

 

Tuesday Ladder

Florence Humphries Bowl played on the second Tuesday of each month

Provided there are sufficient tables playing, two movements take place with points being awarded based on the performance in each movement. This allows pairs to move between the two halves. The winners are the pair who score the best average score counting each pair's  best nine results

 

Individual Championship

Tommy Freeman Rose Bowl played on the fourth Tuesday of the month

Players must play with six different partners over the year. The first score with each separate partner is the one that counts. The winner is the player with the highest average score from the six best qualifying events

 

The Sutton Vase

This is awarded annually to the person who gains the highest number of master points during the year for duplicate play in club sessions, and who wins no other annual duplicate club competition.

 

Prize Handicap

Played on the first Thursday of each month

A monthly handicap competition for pairs. A player's NGS score is used as their handicap
 

Challenge Handicap Cup

Pam Tuplin Cup played on the third Thursday of each month

Based on the handicaps of players at the start of the year, the Challenge Cup is awarded to the individual player who achieves the best average score from their top 6 finishes. There is no restriction on the number of times you can play with the same partner.

 

Teams of Four

Played on the fourth Thursday of each month

A monthly “teams of four” competition

 

Hosted Duplicate Pairs

Played on the second Thursday, third Tuesday, fifth Tuesday and fifth Thursday of each month

Partners will be provided for players who attend on their own. This event is designed for newcomers to duplicate bridge, although it remains popular with players from all parts of the club

 

Andrew Robson Trophy

This is an individual competition taking place three times a year covering the periods January to April, May to August and September to December, for scores obtained on Thursday evenings only. Scores achieved at Teams of Four events will not be included. The winner will be the person with the highest average of all scores. A player requires a minimum of 8 scores to qualify for the competition. The winner will be awarded the Andrew Robson Trophy after the final event of each 4 monthly period. They will also receive a £10 M&S voucher.The competition is called ‘The Andrew Robson Trophy’ after a visit by Andrew Robson to Newbury Bridge Club in November 2011 when Andrew kindly agreed to put his name to the Trophy.

 

 

Roger Kirby Round The Houses Goblets

A winter “teams of four” round robin, arranged by the players and played in their own homes.

 

Edie Gurr Round The Houses Rubber Knockout Trophy

A pairs knockout tournament and played in their own homes over the winter months.

 

Southern Salver

Played on a Sunday afternoon

An individual duplicate event for members only with a maximum of 40 players. Everyone plays to the same simple system. The highlight of the afternoon is the splendid tea served by a dedicated team of members and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

 

New Year Party

Takes place on a Friday evening in January

This primarily a social event. The evening starts with prize giving for the major competitions of the year, followed by dinner and rubber bridge.

 

Club Team Events

The club enters teams in a number of leagues. Occasional friendly matches are played against other clubs. The Simmons Event is an annual match against Basingstoke Bridge Club

Championship Pairs - Amy Baker Salver


1  The Championship Pairs competition is an annual competition for members only for which the Amy Baker Salver (+shield) is awarded to the winning pair.
2  There will usually be one round for every month, on a Tuesday. Each pair must have two identically completed convention cards.
3  The winning pair is the one with the highest aggregate of the best six qualifying rounds in which they compete. A tie will be determined in favour of the pair with the best single percentage score in any round - if still tied, then their second best scores etc.
4  This competition has been nominated, in accordance with EBU directives, as the club major championship and is therefore eligible for local points awarded at the "District" level (ie 150% of the normal) for all rounds.

Individual Championship - The Tommy Freeman Rosebowl


 

1       The Individual Championship (The Tommy Freeman) is an annual competition for members only and for which a trophy (“The Tommy Freeman Rosebowl”) is awarded to the winning player.

2       There will usually be one round every month, on a Tuesday.

3       The winning player is the one with the highest aggregate of the six best qualifying rounds in which they compete, playing with 6 different partners.  A tie will be determined in favour of the player with the best single percentage score in any round (if still tied, then their second best scores, etc).

The first score achieved with each partner is the score that will count.  Any      subsequent scores with the same partner will not be relevant to the competition.

Prize Handicap


1  Each Prize Handicap event is run as an ordinary duplicate evening, with a movement appropriate to the number of participants. The only difference is in its scoring.

2  The average of the handicaps of both players in a partnership is added to the pair's % score for the evening to arrive at an adjusted score. The winning pair is the one with the highest adjusted score. Visitors are included.

3  A player's NGS score is used as their handicap.

Challenge Handicap Cup - The Pam Tuplin Cup

 

1  The period of the competition is one calendar year and the competition is open only to members.

2  Each round is run as an ordinary duplicate evening, with a movement appropriate to the number of participants. The only difference is in the scoring.

3  The handicap for a player is the figure given for them for December of the previous year in the Club Handicap Listing.


4 A player's six best monthly scores will count towards the Challenge Cup final result.

5 A player's final score for this competition will be the average of their six best scores plus their individual handicap.
