Rubber Bridge
Played every Monday
This is an informal evening with instant prizes for the winners. On the first Monday of the month a charity raffle is held.
The Florence Hawkins Trophy:- The trophy is awarded to the pair who achieve the highest score of the year in an individual evening of Rubber Bridge at Newbury Bridge Club.
Championship Pairs
Amy Baker Salver played on the first Tuesday of each month. Winners are awarded the trophy + a shield
The winners are the pair with the best six results with the same partner over the year
Tuesday Ladder
Florence Humphries Bowl played on the second Tuesday of each month
Provided there are sufficient tables playing, two movements take place with points being awarded based on the performance in each movement. This allows pairs to move between the two halves.
Individual Championship
Tommy Freeman Rose Bowl played on the fourth Tuesday of the month
Players must play with six different partners over the year. The first score with each separate partner is the one that counts. The winner is the player with the highest average score from the six best qualifying events
The Sutton Vase
This is awarded annually to the person who gains the highest number of Master Points during the year for duplicate play in club sessions including ABC and 'Improvers with Master Points'. The winner of the Sutton Vase may not have won any other annual Club duplicate competition.
Prize Handicap
Played on the first Thursday of each month
A monthly handicap competition for pairs. A player's most recent NGS score on our website is used as their handicap
Challenge Handicap Cup
Pam Tuplin Cup played on the third Tuesday of each month
Based on the handicaps of players at the start of the year, the Challenge Cup is awarded to the individual player who achieves the best average score from their top 6 finishes. There is no restriction on the number of times you can play with the same partner.
Teams of Four
Played on the fourth Thursday of each month
A monthly “teams of four” competition
Hosted Duplicate Pairs
Played on the second Thursday, third Thursday, fifth Tuesday and fifth Thursday of each month
Partners will be provided for players who attend on their own. This event is designed for newcomers to duplicate bridge, although it remains popular with players from all parts of the club. The third Thursday will be 'relaxed'
Andrew Robson Trophy
This is an individual competition taking place three times a year covering the periods January to April, May to August and September to December, for scores obtained on Thursday evenings only. Scores achieved at Teams of Four events will not be included. The winner will be the person with the highest average of all scores. A player requires a minimum of 8 scores to qualify for the competition. The winner will be awarded the Andrew Robson Trophy after the final event of each 4 monthly period. They will also receive a £10 M&S voucher.The competition is called ‘The Andrew Robson Trophy’ after a visit by Andrew Robson to Newbury Bridge Club in November 2011 when Andrew kindly agreed to put his name to the Trophy.
Roger Kirby Round The Houses Goblets
A winter “teams of four” round robin, arranged by the players and played in their own homes.
Edie Gurr Round The Houses Rubber Knockout Trophy
A pairs knockout tournament and played in their own homes over the winter months.
Southern Salver
Played on a Sunday afternoon
An individual duplicate event for members only with a maximum of 40 players. Everyone plays to the same simple system. The highlight of the afternoon is the splendid tea served by a dedicated team of members and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
New Year Party
Takes place on a Friday evening in January
This primarily a social event. The evening starts with prize giving for the major competitions of the year, followed by dinner and rubber bridge.
Club Team Events
The club enters teams in a number of leagues. Occasional friendly matches are played against other clubs. The Simmons Event is an annual match against Basingstoke Bridge Club
