Convention Cards

A reminder from Ann McMahon, the Chief Director: If you are playing anything but very basic ACOL you and your partner both require the same printed convention card available for perusal by your opponents. The easiest way to achieve this is to download a card from the EBU by clicking  HERE  You can then modify it to your own system. If you are unable to download one for any reason there are also now some blank convention cards in the cupboard in the playing room.

Conservative Club Request

The Conservative Club has requested that all members leave the bar area by 11 pm

Anne Gilks

We are very sad to announce that Anne Gilks died on Friday 15th May. Anne and her husband Howard have enjoyed playing bridge regularly at Newbury Bridge Club since joining a couple of years ago and have made many friends at the Club. Our thoughts are with her family and especially Howard at this time. Anne's funeral is at 2:45, Monday 1st June, at Basingstoke Crematorium, and afterwards at the house in Overton. The family would like to know in advance how many are attending. Chris Doyle is happy to be a contact point in this respect and has also offered seats in his car.

Barry Walker

The Club was also very sad to hear that Barry Walker died at the weekend. Whilst he only played once a month he was a very popular member, and we offer our condolences to all the family. The funeral will be held at Thatcham Crematorium on the 29th at 3pm with refreshments after TBC. Please be aware the family will not be accepting flowers and respectfully ask for donations to Diabetes UK and the BHF

Beginners' Course September 2015
The Club will be running a comprehensive course for beginners from September onwards provided we have a minimum of 12 students.  The maximum is 24.  The course will consist of 3 terms of 11 or 12 weeks and will be held on Friday nights from 7.15pm to 9.45pm at the Bridge Club, which is in the Conservative Club on Cheap Street in Newbury.

We will be holding a open/registration evening on Friday 4th September. Full details will be made available in August and the first term will start on 25th September. It will not be necessary to attend the open evening to sign up for the course but you are advised to pre-register if you can't make it.
The lessons are all given by teachers who have taken an English Bridge Union course. We also have at least one and often two additional helpers at all  classes. The cost of the course is as in 2013 - £75 for the first term which includes a comprehensive EBU training book on which the course is based, and £60 for the second and third terms.
Relaxed Hosted Duplicate

The Relaxed Hosted Duplicate gives more time than usual to play each hand than on an average Duplicate evening and is generally less strict.  It is run with the explicit intention of encouraging newer players to make that step up from Improvers, No Fear Bridge, Rubber etc. This year we have seen quite a few people take up that opportunity. We hope those who have played once or twice will continue to come and that others who have yet to try it out will give it a go.

The next Relaxed Hosted Duplicate is Tuesday 16th June. You can come with or without a partner.

Improver Bridge

                 Friday  evenings      7:00-10:00 p.m.
