North decided his hand was too strong to open a weak Lucas 2 in spades, so opted for the correct 1♣ opening. A key decision. After the 3♥ pre-empt by West, North made another good decison to continue showing his shape with a bid of 3♠. With the adverse vulnerability and flat shape, East decided not to make an advance sacrifice of 5♥ . It would not have made any difference anyway, as by now South was only expecting to play in a spade slam. 4♥ was a slam try and control bid, and the double from West confirmed first round control of the heart suit, requesting a heart lead. North by now thought he had done more than enough and signed off in 4♠ . After key card blackwood, with only 1 of the key cards being shown, South had a few doubts about bidding the slam. But the double by West convinced him North did not hold the useless A♥ and thought the slam must still be a good proposition. Fortunately the breaks in clubs and spades were friendly and the slam came home easily.
