Board 25: 23 March 2017
Roman Key Card Blackwood (RKCB)

As far as I am concerned, any serious partnership must have RKCB in their bidding armoury. Furthermore they need to use all of it! not just the first level of responses, so they can show the Q of the agreed trump suit and specific Kings in the side suits as well. For the really serious players it also incorporates suit asks to find 2nd and third controls in a specific side suit as well, but this part does not come up that often..Combined with splinter bids and first and second round control showing bids,RKCB enables you to bid accurately to low level point count slams. Board 25 provided an excellent example of this when a cold grand slam was bid and made at one of the tables.

The 4D bid was a game forcing splinter showing at least four spades, and a singleton or void in diamonds. The excellent bid of 4H was a first or second round control bid, and a slam try. South now realised his hand was massive if the control bid was the AH. He then launched into RKCB. The 5D response showed 0 or 3 of the "Aces", where the KS counts as an Ace. Clearly after the slam try of 4H by North, this must be 3  of the 5 "Aces", and confirmed the control bid of 4H showed the AH. The 5H bid from South now asked for the QS. The 6C response showed the QS and either the KC or the two red suit Kings.South could clearly see from his own hand that North had the KC, and it was easy to bid the grand slam in spades. An excellent, but in truth a relatively simple sequence, if you are prepared to work at your game.
