THE 2018 RUIA CUP

MULTIPLE TEAMS COMPETITION

This took place over 3 sessions in May, June & July.

WINNERS

EVE LIGHTHILL, SID TRAVERS,

MARCELLO & ELENA ROSENBAUM

(and BOB COOKE in the first round)

Eve Lighthill’s team started the evening with two good sessions behind them and a substantial lead. But as the final session progressed Barbara Lewis's team whittled away at the lead until, after the last of the 24 boards, only two victory points separated the teams.
Well done to Eve's team on an excellent win and commiserations to Barbara Lewis,Alec Smalley, Irene Davies and Karen Reissmann on a fine performance on the final evening but just finishing second.
Thanks also to Bhim Ruia for presenting the Ruia Cup to the winning team. Looking at the plinth the first year was 1978 and won by a team captained by Jeff Morris and containing Boris Ewart, John Holland and Michelle Brunner. Another interesting win was 1985 when the cup was won by Celia Rawlings playing with Kevin Comrie and Frank Starkie. For those that do not remember that far back Celia is now Celia Comrie!

Regards, Jeff.

Crockfords

Congratulations to John Holland, Alan Mould, Michael Byrne and Kieran Dyke (London) who have won their fourth round Crockford's match qualifying them for the multi-team final to be held in Solihull in September.

NICKO

And then there was one! The MBC Team of Michael Byrne, Gary Hyett, John Holland, Alan Mould (also Michael Newman) beat Allendale and are now the only county team left in the competition. They will now play Tunbridge Wells in the semi-final.

CONGRATULATIONS!

President's Cup - Manchester A Team Win!

The annual inter county teams of eight was held over the weekend of 30th June to 1st July at Spondon, Derby.  This year counties were allowed to enter more than one team.  Only Manchester availed themselves of this opportunity, eight teams entered:- Derby, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Merseyside, North Wales, Hereford and the Manchester teams.  At the end of Saturday Derby were leading and the Manchester B team were just ahead of Manchester A.  On Sunday the Manchester B team changed completely and five of the Manchester A team changed.   Manchester B dropped a little to fourth, but did well, Manchester A overtook Derby and just pipped Lancashire to win by 3 VPs.  This is Manchester's third successive victory.  Full results are on the Manchester and Altrincham club web sites.

Playing for Manchester A were: on Saturday John Holland/Alan Mould, John Parsons/Nicholas Greer, David Barton/Leslie Klein, Andy Green/David Sarabowski; on Sunday John Holland/Rodney Lighton, Leslie Klein/David Barton, Tom Slater/Alec Smalley, Kath & Alan Nelson.

Manchester Win Pachabo......again!

Congratulations to the Manchester team of John Holland, Rodney Lighton, Michael Byrne and Michael Newman who won the inter-counties teams of four at Bedford on 9-10th June.  The team started well on the Saturday, neck and neck with Hampshire throughout the day, ending second by about 4 VPs.  The Sunday morning session saw Manchester win all five of their matches by good margins to lead by about 15 VPs.  On the Sunday afternoon Manchester managed to avoid snatching defeat from the jaws of victory despite losing four of their five matches, fortunately by not too large margins, to finish just ahead of Nottingham who had a late surge to push Hampshire into third place.  This result continues Manchester's fine run in the last five years; first, second, second, first, and second.

Full results are on the EBU web site.

Changes to the National Grading Scheme

Changes have been introduced to the National Grading Scheme. These were made in response to feedback received during the consultation of clubs which took place last year.

  • The grade of players with 'mature' grades will not change when they partner players who have played fewer than 150 graded boards. The session will not count towards the grade of the more experienced player, but will count towards the grade of the less experienced player. It is hoped that this will stop people being deterred from acting as a host or mentor at their club due to concerns they have about how it might affect their NGS.
  • Grades will be published once you have played 150 boards (previously 300) but they will change more quickly than before to enable new players to reach an appropriate grade sooner. A grade will still be considered 'evolving' until you have played 1000 boards, at which point it 'matures'.

These changes are now in effect.

Playing bridge could contribute to a long life

A TED talk has outlined that the social interaction which comes from activities such as playing bridge (with bridge specifically referenced) could be a key to a long and happy life. A study found that frequent face-to-face social interaction was a greater indicator of long life than other factors such as your weight or whether you drink. Watch the talk to find out more.

Bridge has also been identified in this article as a great activity for older people to combat loneliness.

BEN BEEVER SUNDAY INTERMEDIATE SEMINARS

Ben Beever has 2 more seminars remaining in June. All the seminars will take place on Sunday afternoons starting at 3.15pm. There will be a lesson on the subject followed by prepared hands demonstrating the topic. There will also be a short break for refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits provided by the Club).

On Sunday 2nd June Ben looks at Conventional Overcalls (Some overcalls, such as of the opponent’s suit, are pointless in a natural sense, so may be recruited for much more useful purposes. This session shows how experts use them, including a look at more recent developments.

The final seminar is on Sunday 9th June and is titled Introduction to Endplays (Ever been given a ruff and discard as declarer? This session shows how to force or persuade the defenders to allow you one, or make them take the risk out of a finesse.)

The cost for these seminars is £8 for members and £10 for non-members.

BORIS MENDLESOHN

We are very say to report the recent death of Boris Mendlesohn after a long illness. Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s Boris was one of the strongest rubber Bridge players in Manchester. In 1976 Boris was a member of Mary Higson’s team which won the Infirmary (now Higson) Cup.
