Road Works on Palatine RoadRoad works are taking place to re-surface Palatine Road for 4 weeks from Monday 10th October.  At the moment there is only one way traffic allowed along Palatine Road from the Lapwing Lane end to the junction with Wilmslow Road.  Palatine Road is currently closed at the Wilmslow Road/Palatine Road junction with no traffic allowed to travel down Palatine Road from this junction towards Lapwing Lane.....so currently you have to turn left when you leave the club!

It is with great sadness that I must inform members of the untimely death of Susan Tarr who lost her battle with cancer on October 23rd.

North Wales Swiss Pairs

Congratulations to Bernard and Rhona Goldenfield who won at Shotton on Sunday 9th October, John Holland and Tony Coley were third.

Northern League Final Round - Manchester win A and B Divisions

The final round of Northern league matches took place on Saturday 8th October.
In the A division at Bolton, Manchester, fielding their Tollemache team, won on the day and increased their overall lead to finish nine VPs ahead of Yorkshire 2.  The team was Alan Mould/Ollie Burgess, Alec Smalley/Tom Slater, John Holland/Gary Hyett, Michael Byrne/Michael Newman.  Tom and Alec were our best pair on the cross IMPs.  The A2 team of Kath & Alan Nelson, Royce Alexander/John Currie, Sylvia Massey/Herbert Potts, Raymond Semp/Peter Jones finished fifth on the day and sixth overall.  Peter and Raymond were the best of our A2 pairs.

The B division was played at Bradford where our team of Pete Foster/John Roberts, Gillian McMullan/Neil Thomas, Eve Lighthill/Ken Hassell, Robert & Joyce Jones had an excellent day, winning the day's event and overtaking Cumbria to take the division title.  Special congratulations to Neil and Gillian who were the best pair in the division on the cross IMPs with 1.5 IMPs per board and to Eve and Ken who were second with 1.07 IMPs per board.

The C division was played at Manchester where our team of Irene Davies/Karen Reissmann, Ann Thornton/Paul Murray, Joan Lewis/Roy Higginbottom, Liz and Stephen Halstead finished seventh on the day and overall.  Irene and Karen were our best pair on cross IMPs.

Mossop team wins Crockfords Cup

The team of David Mossop, Alex Hydes (London), Jason Hackett, Justin Hackett (both Staffs & Shrops), David Price (Suffolk) & Colin Simpson (Berks & Bucks) have won the 2015-16 Crockfords Cup. All the team have won this competition three times or more, with Alex retaining the trophy he won last year with different teammates; the other five all won the 2013-14 competition together.

The MCBA (county) selection committee has chosen the following team to represent Manchester in the qualifying round of the inter county teams of eight on 19-20th November.

John Holland tops National Master Point list for the fifth time!

Congratulations to John Holland, who has topped the annual Master Points list for the fifth time (the last four years in succession!) and has claimed the Sunday Telegraph Salver.

John Holland's good year has seen him reclaim the top spot in the Gold Point rankings. He moved marginally ahead of the 2014 leader, David Gold, holding 98.92 to David's 98.02. Andrew Robson, Tony Forrester and Alexander Allfrey complete the top five.

John, who also won this award in 2009, 2012 and 2013 & 2014 gained a total of 29,397 points in 2015.

AMAZING!

Newsletter - June 2013

NEW MONDAY AFTERNOON DUPLICATE FORMAT

Monday afternoon duplicates are proving to be very popular with the new format of a short talk at 1.00pm by Dave Debbage followed by supervision. Start time is 1.15pm with play commencing before 1.30pm. Table money is £6.00 and teas, coffees and homemade scones are an added attraction.

 

 

SENIORS KNOCK OUT

Well done to John Hassett, Jeff Morris and John Holland together with Clive Owen from the North East who have reached the final of the Seniors Knock Out (The Gerard Faulkner Salver) after beating Derek Oram’s Hertfordshire team in the semi-final.

 

 

EASTBOURNE SPRING BANK HOLIDAY CONGRESS

Well done to Michael Byrne who won the prestigious pairs event with Simon Cope on Saturday and Sunday 25-26 May. John Holland also did very well finishing third.

 

In the Swiss Teams on Monday 27 May John Holland was in the winning team.

 

 

SIMULTANEOUS PAIRS

The Annual Bill Hughes Simultaneous Pairs will be held on Thursday 27 June 7:30 pm.

 

 

RUIA CUP

This popular SWISS TEAMS held over three sessions in May, June and July will continue on Thursday 20th June 2013. After the first round held on 16th May David Debbage’s team have a perfect score of 40 Victory Points (John Hassett, Catherine Draper & Andrew Woodcock). Can they be knocked off their perch in Round II ?

 

 

Michelle Brunner Memorial Event

Will be held on Saturday 20th July at 1.00pm with the same format as last year – a mixed pivot teams for teams of four players and a sandwich and scone buffet at half-time. The proceeds of the event and raffle will go to charity so teams are asked to donate a minimum of £10 per player.

 

 

CROCKFORDS CUP Well done to Paul Hackett who was a member of the winning team in the final of the Crockfords Cup the English National teams Championship.

 

 

MANCHESTER LEAGUE Michael Byrne’s St Titus team (Michael Newman, Gareth Hyett, Rodney Lighton, Alan Mould, Mike Bell & Sarah O’Connor) won their 4th league crown in the last six years in a nailbiting ending to the season finishing just 3 victory points ahead of the runners up.

 

 

BEN BEEVER SUNDAY INTERMEDIATE SEMINARS

 

Ben Beever has 2 more seminars remaining in June. All the seminars will take place on Sunday afternoons starting at 3.15pm. There will be a lesson on the subject followed by prepared hands demonstrating the topic. There will also be a short break for refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits provided by the Club).

 

 

On Sunday 2nd June Ben looks at Conventional Overcalls (Some overcalls, such as of the opponent’s suit, are pointless in a natural sense, so may be recruited for much more useful purposes. This session shows how experts use them, including a look at more recent developments.

 

The final seminar is on Sunday 9th June and is titled Introduction to Endplays (Ever been given a ruff and discard as declarer? This session shows how to force or persuade the defenders to allow you one, or make them take the risk out of a finesse.)

 

The cost for these seminars is £8 for members and £10 for non-members.

 

 

BORIS MENDLESOHN

We are very say to report the recent death of Boris Mendlesohn after a long illness. Back in the 1970’s and 1980’s Boris was one of the strongest rubber Bridge players in Manchester. In 1976 Boris was a member of Mary Higson’s team which won the Infirmary (now Higson) Cup.

SIMULTANEOUS PAIRS

EBU British Spring Pairs Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th April. Bridget will be preparing some special treats on a French theme for the Simultaneous on Thursday 11th April –so expect crusty French bread, homemade salmon pate, homemade chicken pate and a cheeseboard.

 

The EBU Spring Pairs will be held at the club on Wednesday 8th May, Thursday 9th May and Monday 13th May.

 

RUIA CUP

This popular SWISS TEAMS held over three sessions in May, June and July will start on Thursday 16th May 2013 so start organising your teams as soon as possible! Please let Jeff know if you are playing or if you are short of teammates.

THURSDAY NIGHT SWISS PAIRS

It is our intention to run this popular event every available Thursday. When the Ruia Cup Swiss Teams is held on the 16th May it is hoped that regular Swiss Pairs players will play and make up teams. Swiss Pairs are scheduled for 18th April, 25th April, 2nd May but not the 9th May as it is the EBU Spring Pairs Simultaneous and Bridget will be preparing something special to eat on that night

 

 

BEN BEEVER SUNDAY INTERMEDIATE SEMINARS

 

Ben Beever is holding 5 more seminars in May and June. All the seminars will take place on Sunday afternoons starting at 3.15pm. The first seminar is on Sunday 5th May and looks at Five Card Majors (Learn how to improve your bidding system and find your 5-3 fits immediately by showing 5 card majors with your opening bid).

The second seminar is on Sunday 19th May and covers Slam Practice (Following a very brief refresher seminar, this session will consist of 12 to 14  practice hands).

On Sunday 26th May, Ben will be examining Danger Hands. This session will explain how to prevent a particular opponent from gaining the lead, and when to duck if you cannot stop them doing so.).
