MANCHESTER BRIDGE CLUB PLANS

Dear Member,

As you are probably aware the Manchester Bridge Club will be vacating our Palatine Road premises at the beginning of 2019.
Of course it is with great sadness that we do so, but we can reflect that Palatine Road has been a wonderful venue for 40 years – for which we will be having a celebratory party this Autumn on Sunday 9th December.
In the meantime all our activities will be as normal with the club premises being available for matches, county events and meetings, afternoon rubber bridge and Wednesday night duplicate and play class.
On Mondays,Tuesdays and Thursdays the club will still be using the Casino until the end of the year.
It is our intention to continue the Manchester Bridge Club activities in different premises in 2019 and we are currently looking at some options. However, if members of the club have any suggestions, we would be happy to investigate.

Best Wishes

Bridge lessons reach top gear

Autumn is the busiest time of year for bridge lessons, and this month many have started around the country at bridge clubs, and with independent teachers.

In a humorous column for the Sunday Times, Jeremy Clarkson has written about his recent attempts to learn to play to bridge - with varying degrees of success, confusion, and inebriation.

BEN BEEVER SUNDAY INTERMEDIATE SEMINARS 3.15pm to 5.30pm

Sunday 6th April: Card Combinations

How should we play QJxx opposite Kxx with plenty of entries to both hands? In this lesson we will learn some key principles to help us find the best plays to make 1 more trick than everyone else.

Sunday 4th May:  Game Trial Bids

After partner has raised your major suit how do you invite game?  Most would simply bid 3 of the major, but in fact a variety of invites are available to the expert, allowing specific information to be asked for. Also, after the opposition compete how can you distinguish between a game try and a desire to play in your own suit at the three level without partner thinking you are inviting?   Come along and find out.

Each seminar starts with a discussion on the topic of the day. This is followed by the opportunity to play a number of set hands that have been designed to illustrate the topic and help establish the new techniques learned. There's a short break in the middle for light refreshments provided by the club and the workshop usually lasts around two hours.

Cost is £8 for Members

and £10 for non-members.

All are very welcome

and partners not required.

BEN BEEVER SUNDAY INTERMEDIATE SEMINARS

Sunday 12th January: Discovery Play

When you have a 2-way finesse, how do you decide which way to take it? Helping to solve such problems this lesson will show you the value of teasing out information about the closed hands, whether declarer or defender, to improve your card play decisions.

Sunday 26th January: Lebensohl

1) Partner opens 1NT, RHO overcalls at the 2 level and you bid 3C. Is this forcing or not? 2) Left opponent opens a weak 2S and partner doubles. You bid 3H. Partner has 18 HCP with 4 hearts - should she bid up? These are common situations that need agreements. This lesson will give you a popular method to deal with them.

Sunday 9th February: Signals In Defence

As defenders your task is a tough one. This lesson will show you how to pass information to each other legally, so that you take all the tricks to which you are entitled!

Sunday 23rd February: Trump Reduction

Ever noticed a bad trump break and had the thought, "if only I had one more trump in dummy I could finesse in trumps and make the contract"? In this lesson we show a technique for making such contracts - when most players would simply give up!

BEN BEEVER’S NEW BEGINNERS PLAY COURSE –WEDNESDAY 17th September 2014  at 7.30pm

BEN BEEVER SUNDAY WORKSHOP SEMINARS

Sunday 7th September at 3.15pm

"2 Club Openings"

Once in a while you have a hand that's too strong to open at the 1 level and is unsuitable for the 2NT opening. This lesson will explain how to recognise and bid such hands, using an all-purpose strong, artificial 2C opening.

Sunday 12th October at 3.15pm

"Entries"

It is often crucial to be able to lead from a particular hand at the right time. This Workshop / Seminar will show you how to take care of your entries so you don't get cut off from your winners.

Sunday 26th October at 3.15pm

"Finessing"

We all learn about finesses early on in our bridge career. In this Workshop / Seminar we take a closer look at this technique and examine how to choose which suit to finesse in and which card to finesse!

Sunday 16th November at 3.15pm

"Establishing"

Long suits and high cards often allow extra tricks to be made. This Workshop / Seminar will show you how to identify and tackle such holdings.

Sunday 30th November at 3.15pm

"Winning at Duplicate"

Understanding how bridge duplicate scoring works is vital if you want to win regularly. Here we take a close look at the 'scoreslip' and extract some useful tips for scoring heavily.

Each seminar starts with a discussion on the topic of the day. This is followed by the opportunity to play a number of set hands that have been designed to illustrate the topic and help establish the new techniques learned. There's a short break in the middle for light refreshments provided by the club and the workshop usually lasts around two hours.

Cost is £8 for Members and £10 for non-members.

All are very welcome and partners not required.

Thursday 6th February

We had a record turn-out for the Swiss Pairs last week

with 9 tables but also with a couple of computer gremlins

getting in the way!

Results are below:-

SWISS PAIRS RESULTS for THURSDAY 6th FEBRUARY 2014
I have finally managed to decipher scores from the Swiss Pairs on Thursday night after the computer crashed which was apparently something to do with the pairs who did not enter the last board on the first round for some reason. This ‘blip’ is being checked over the weekend and any gremlins fixed so all will be up and running as usual for next week!
I also now have the scores for each round - and can include these if necessary later on but I will have to phone up EBU on Monday to see how we sort out pay to play NGS and Masterpoints as I am unable to send the results electronically!
Here are the final results as best as I have been able to do them.

Scores are out of 80.
1     Michael Byrne and Tom Slater                          67      83.75%

CECIL FRANKS

It is with much sorrow that we inform members of the sudden death of Cecil Franks. Cecil has been one of the club's greatest supporters over many years playing bridge at the club since the mid 1970s. He served as Conservative MP for Barrow from 1983-1992 and after his parliamentary career ended he was a regular player in the club of both duplicate and rubber bridge. In recent years Cecil has survived a number of serious health scares but his death was a great shock to his many friends and family. He will be greatly missed.
