Road Works on Palatine RoadRoad works are taking place to re-surface Palatine Road for 4 weeks from Monday 10th October.  At the moment there is only one way traffic allowed along Palatine Road from the Lapwing Lane end to the junction with Wilmslow Road.  Palatine Road is currently closed at the Wilmslow Road/Palatine Road junction with no traffic allowed to travel down Palatine Road from this junction towards Lapwing Lane.....so currently you have to turn left when you leave the club!

It is with great sadness that I must inform members of the untimely death of Susan Tarr who lost her battle with cancer on October 23rd.

North Wales Swiss Pairs

Congratulations to Bernard and Rhona Goldenfield who won at Shotton on Sunday 9th October, John Holland and Tony Coley were third.

Northern League Final Round - Manchester win A and B Divisions

The final round of Northern league matches took place on Saturday 8th October.
In the A division at Bolton, Manchester, fielding their Tollemache team, won on the day and increased their overall lead to finish nine VPs ahead of Yorkshire 2.  The team was Alan Mould/Ollie Burgess, Alec Smalley/Tom Slater, John Holland/Gary Hyett, Michael Byrne/Michael Newman.  Tom and Alec were our best pair on the cross IMPs.  The A2 team of Kath & Alan Nelson, Royce Alexander/John Currie, Sylvia Massey/Herbert Potts, Raymond Semp/Peter Jones finished fifth on the day and sixth overall.  Peter and Raymond were the best of our A2 pairs.

The B division was played at Bradford where our team of Pete Foster/John Roberts, Gillian McMullan/Neil Thomas, Eve Lighthill/Ken Hassell, Robert & Joyce Jones had an excellent day, winning the day's event and overtaking Cumbria to take the division title.  Special congratulations to Neil and Gillian who were the best pair in the division on the cross IMPs with 1.5 IMPs per board and to Eve and Ken who were second with 1.07 IMPs per board.

The C division was played at Manchester where our team of Irene Davies/Karen Reissmann, Ann Thornton/Paul Murray, Joan Lewis/Roy Higginbottom, Liz and Stephen Halstead finished seventh on the day and overall.  Irene and Karen were our best pair on cross IMPs.

Mossop team wins Crockfords Cup

The team of David Mossop, Alex Hydes (London), Jason Hackett, Justin Hackett (both Staffs & Shrops), David Price (Suffolk) & Colin Simpson (Berks & Bucks) have won the 2015-16 Crockfords Cup. All the team have won this competition three times or more, with Alex retaining the trophy he won last year with different teammates; the other five all won the 2013-14 competition together.

The MCBA (county) selection committee has chosen the following team to represent Manchester in the qualifying round of the inter county teams of eight on 19-20th November.

John Holland tops National Master Point list for the fifth time!

Congratulations to John Holland, who has topped the annual Master Points list for the fifth time (the last four years in succession!) and has claimed the Sunday Telegraph Salver.

John Holland's good year has seen him reclaim the top spot in the Gold Point rankings. He moved marginally ahead of the 2014 leader, David Gold, holding 98.92 to David's 98.02. Andrew Robson, Tony Forrester and Alexander Allfrey complete the top five.

John, who also won this award in 2009, 2012 and 2013 & 2014 gained a total of 29,397 points in 2015.

Congratulations to Manchester Bridge Club A Team who won the 2013 Gazette Cup.  This is an event for teams of 8.  Manchester A were winning at half time by a narrow margin of 3 VPs but extended their lead to finish the competition ahead by 11 VPs.  This was mainly due to excellent play in the second half by Mike Bell and Sarah O'Connor.  The full team was Mike Bell, Alan Nelson, John Hassett, Rodney Lighton, Sarah O'Connor, Kath Nelson, Jeff Morris and Rhona Goldenfield.

Thanks to Irene Davies and Barbara Lewis for organising this enjoyable event.

Bridge For School Players at Half Term 2013
Bridge For School Players at Half Term 2013

For 2 weeks over the 2013 school/college half term holidays we are providing opportunities for young people to learn, play and compete at both Minibridge and Bridge.  These sessions will be held on Monday 11th, Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th February and also the following week on Monday 18th, Tuesday 19th and Wednesday 20th February.  The sessions will be held between 10.30am and 12.30pm on each of these days.  On both Mondays participants are invited to stay and play in our duplicate bridge session or supervised bridge session which start at 1.pm.

Sunday Afternoon Seminar on 10th February

 Ben's final Sunday afternoon seminar in this current series is on Position and Vulnerability Considerations. This seminar will take place on Sunday 10th February and will start at 3.15pm. There will be a lesson on the subject followed by prepared hands demonstrating the topic.  There will also be a short break for refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits provided by the Club). Previous seminars in this series were Declarer Play Technique, Evaluating Your Hand  and How Best to Support Partner's Suit.

The cost for these seminars is £8 for members and £10 for non-members.

Please let Ben know of any other topics you would like Ben to cover in future seminars.

Ben is also looking at running some seminars for more advanced players in the new year, potential subjects include endplays, squeezes, 5 card majors and suit combinations.  Please let Jeff/David/Ben or any Committee member whether these topics would interest you or if there are other topics you would like Ben to cover.

CHANNEL TROPHY

 

Sarah O'’Connor, Sinead Bird, Kirstyn Fuller & Laura Bonney represented England girls in the international match against Holland, France and Belgium in December 2012 where they finished equal second.  Rob Myers represented England in the Under 25 Team and Michael Byrne was Non Playing Captain of the winning Under 20 Team.

 

 

BEN BEEVER SUNDAY INTERMEDIATE SEMINARS

 

Ben Beever is holding 4 more seminars in January and February. All the seminars will take place on Sunday afternoons starting at 3.15pm. There will be a lesson on the subject followed by prepared hands demonstrating the topic. There will also be a short break for refreshments (tea, coffee and biscuits provided by the Club).

 

The first seminar is on Sunday 13th January and looks at Declarer Play Technique. The second seminar is on Sunday 20th January and covers Evaluating Your Hand. On Sunday 3rd February, Ben will be examining how best to Support Partner's Suit and on Sunday 10th February Ben looks at Position and Vulnerability Considerations.

 

The cost for these seminars is £8 for members and £10 for non-members.

 

BEGINNERS CLASSES

 

Susan Triggs and Dave Debbage start an afternoon Beginners Class on Monday 14th January at 1.30pm

 

Ben Beever will be doing a five lesson Fundamentals of Bidding Course on Tuesday 15th January starting at 7.30pm.This is a follow up to the Basic Beginners Course and an excellent revision opportunity for those that want to revise their bidding.

 

Ben Beever starts his next Basic Beginners Class on Wednesday 16th January at 7.30pm. This is a five lesson introduction to the basics of card play and the cost is £50 for the course.

 

 

SANTA CLAUS PAIRS

 

In an excellent turnout of 16 tables the winners were the formidable pairing of Jason Hackett and Rob Myers with Bernard & Rhona Goldenfield second and Edward Levy and Mike Burtt in third.

 

CHEADLE ROYAL CUP

 

Congratulations to John Parsons & Nicholas Greer who won this Monday night event counting scores from September to December.

 

YEAR END CONGRESS - BLACKPOOL

 

Well done to David Debbage and Edward Levy who came third in the Swiss Pairs and to Tracy Capal who was part of the winning team.

 

YEAR END CONGRESS - LONDON

 

John Holland came second in partnership with Ben Green in the Swiss Pairs. In the teams Paul Hackett was a member of the second placed team while Michael Byrne was a member of the team in third place.

 

MANCHESTER CONGRESS

Well done to Tracy Capal who won the Pairs playing with Liz Muir and to John Holland and Michael Byrne who were part of the winning team in the Championship teams. Also extremely well done to Christine Barrowclough and Nic Tarrier who finished second  in  the Players Progress Cup on the Saturday and to David Owen who won the Kevin Comrie Cup on the Sunday in partnership with Irish visitor Leo McCormac.
