MANCHESTER BRIDGE CLUB PLANS

Dear Member,

As you are probably aware the Manchester Bridge Club will be vacating our Palatine Road premises at the beginning of 2019.
Of course it is with great sadness that we do so, but we can reflect that Palatine Road has been a wonderful venue for 40 years – for which we will be having a celebratory party this Autumn.
In the meantime all our activities will be as normal with the club premises being available for matches, county events and meetings, afternoon rubber bridge and Wednesday night duplicate and play class.
On Mondays,Tuesdays and Thursdays the club will still be using the Casino until the end of the year.
It is our intention to continue the Manchester Bridge Club activities in different premises in 2019 and we are currently looking at some options. However, if members of the club have any suggestions, we would be happy to investigate.

Best Wishes

Jeff Morris and Dave Debbage

England win Junior International double

The Junior Camrose and Peggy Bayer competitions took place at the weekend in Dublin and England ran away comfortable winners in both events.

In the Junior Camrose, the U26 team started off with a loss to Scotland, but recovered quickly and ended up winning with a match to spare, ahead of Scotland and Ireland. This win makes it five in a row for England, and for Shivam Shah.

The U21 Peggy Bayer team showed little mercy in reclaiming the trophy from Ireland, with every result going near maximum and ending up with 177.79 out of a possible 180 VPs from the weekend. More than 100 VPs behind them, the fight for second place was more competitive with the CBAI team edging out the Ireland team.

Under 26 team: Toby Nonnenmacher & Kyle Lam; Oliver Powell & Jon Derrick; Shivam Shah & Yvonne Wiseman; NPC: Simon Cope; Asst NPC Harry Anoyrkatis
Under 21 team: Ben Norton & Sam Behrens; Jonathan Clark & Kripa Panchagnula; Liam Sanderson & Daniel Winter; NPC: Michael Byrne

EBU denied leave to appeal court ruling; VAT case to be heard in March

The EBU is disappointed to report that it has been denied leave to appeal the ruling given following 2015's Judicial Review of Sport England's definition of 'sport', and how it relates to bridge.

At the hearing which took place on Thursday (19th January) Lady Justice Macur determined that despite the arguments put forward by the EBU's legal team (which can be read here), there was insufficient prospect of the decision being overturned to warrant the court holding an appeal hearing.

This is the final action which the EBU will be taking in its current attempts to have Sport England recognise bridge as a 'sport'.

This decision has no impact on the VAT case which will go to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg on 2nd March. This was referred to the court by the British courts, in order to seek clarification on the EU's directive that no VAT should be charged on sporting activities, and whether this should apply to bridge. Bridge is already exempt from VAT in a number of EU countries, and it is in the interests of all member states for a clear definition to be sought. 'Brexit' will therefore have no affect on the case, and in addition a positive ruling could results in a rebate on VAT which has previously been paid.

John Holland tops National Master Point list for the fifth time!

Congratulations to John Holland, who has topped the annual Master Points list for the fifth time (the last four years in succession!) and has claimed the Sunday Telegraph Salver.

John Holland's good year has seen him reclaim the top spot in the Gold Point rankings. He moved marginally ahead of the 2014 leader, David Gold, holding 98.92 to David's 98.02. Andrew Robson, Tony Forrester and Alexander Allfrey complete the top five.

John, who also won this award in 2009, 2012 and 2013 & 2014 gained a total of 29,397 points in 2015.

MBC TEAM REACH QUARTER FINALS OF THE GOLD CUP!!

The Gold Cup is Britain’s most prestigious knockout teams event and is considered to be the pinnacle of a bridge player’s career to win it.
There have been some Manchester players who have won it over the years. In recent times John Hassett and myself were in the winning team in 1987 and Alan Mould and Gary Hyett were winners in 1997 and 1999. John Holland won the Gold Cup for the first and only time in 2015. Jason and Justin Hackett have won it four times –in 2000, 2001,2005 and 2008. Paul Hackett has never won it!

It is a knockout event throughout and we have managed to reach the last eight with a close victory over a team including players from the Welsh national team. In the quarter final, due to take place in September, we are drawn against one of the top seeds including Andrew Robson ,Tony Forrester and Mike Bell.
Our team is John Hassett and myself and David Debbage and Ed Levy,  with Michael Newman and Adrian Kenworthy having played one match in an earlier round.

England have enjoyed a fantastic European Youth Team Championships, which finished yesterday in Slovakia.

The U26 Women and U21s won bronze medals, and all four teams qualified for next year's World Championships - England being the only country to achieve this. This exceeds the pre-tournament expectations with Alan Shillitoe, NPC of the U26 team calling it, "by far the best all-round performance we have achieved at this level". We echo his "congratulations to all the players who achieved this and thanks to all the coaches, captains and mentors who helped to develop and lead the players".

Under 21 NPC Michael Byrne says:
"I am incredibly proud of my team of 6 players Ben Norton, Sam Behrens, Liam Sanderson, Daniel Winter, Jonathan Clark, Kripa Panchagnula and Bryony Youngs as Coach who showed nothing but true grit and strength of character in the final day to win the Bronze medal.

"They played their hearts out and never gave up even when bad luck and illness threatened to ruin our success. They were all fantastic team players who gave their heart and soul to represent their country, and I am proud to stand alongside them as we collect our medal"

Tournament Bridge in England: 1925-1945

Those who have an interest in bridge history will hopefully enjoy reading this book over the festive period. Written by keen bridge historian Richard Fleet, it looks, as the title suggests, at the competitions that took place during a key period in the game's history. He also focuses on some of the main contributors, personalities, and great players of the era.

Thanks to Richard for all his work in putting this together and for sharing it with us all.

GARY WALLMAN
GARY WALLMAN
I am terribly sad to report the death of Gary Wallman a supporter of the club since our days in Central Road – over 45 years ago!!
Gary was basically a rubber bridge player but did turn out to play in the occasional duplicate event such as the Santa Claus Pairs. Gary also sponsored and played in a team that played in the Commonwealth Nations Bridge Championship Open Invitation Teams. However his main love was rubber bridge and I remember well the many enjoyable Charity Rubber Bridge Competitions that we played together over many years.
Gary was President of Sale synagogue and despite failing health in recent years continued energetically to fulfil his duties including cooking for a lunchtime club for the elderly. He is survived by his wife Anita and children Jonathan, Paul and Suzie. He will be greatly missed.

So far the amount raised including gift aid is £501.25

WELL DONE!!

Its not too late to support Ollie and this great cause.

Ollie explains his reasons for supporting MIND

"Whilst I'd rather be declaring 3NT or 4H, on Sunday 28th May, I shall be doing the Manchester 10K run for MIND.  MIND is a charity in support of mental health - a condition in my opinion that goes unrecognised or more so, easily dismissed. Whilst you can physically see a broken leg, a mental illness is not that recogniseable. As many of you know, I have had my own share of set backs and with professional support, I think my earlier days would have been so much easier. So please give anything you can in support of this cause and if there is another 18 year old me floating about, then perhaps he can get the help which I was maybe not able to do.

By the way, how far is 10K?!??!"

Manchester BC members do well at puzzles on Radio4

And the bridge players didn't disappoint, doing well with the puzzles - listen to see if you could answer the questions they were given.

European Court considers VAT exemption for bridge

On 2nd March, at the European Courts of Justice in Luxembourg, judges considered the EU Directive under which sporting activities are exempt from VAT.

At present the majority of the governments of member nations of the EU exempt bridge activities from VAT under this directive. The UK government does not implement the directive in this way, and the EBU, with the co-operation of HMRC, brought the matter before the British Court. The British Courts referred the case to the EU Courts to seek clarification regarding the intention of their directive. Prominent MPs have given their support to the removal of VAT from entry fees to Mind Sport competitions - Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron calling it "a common sense approach".

The Court looked at the intention of the directive in broad terms, and once it has been established then this can be applied to the case of bridge specifically. A preliminary judgement will be made on 15th June.

Despite 'Brexit' the ruling is still significant: a 'positive' result would enable a refund to the EBU of VAT paid in recent years; it would establish the basis for the implementation of the directive in all EU member states, not just the UK.

"Bridge is cool": The Times reports on the rising popularity of bridge among young players

Bridge is "quite cool". So say the increasing number of juniors learning to play.

The Times featured an article on Saturday reporting on the rise in popularity of bridge amongst young players. The charity English Bridge Education and Development regularly receives calls from schools and bridge teachers wanting to introduce bridge into the classroom, and the number of juniors involved in activities organised by the EBU, EBED, affiliated clubs and counties, has risen sharply.

Bridge is proving very popular with the young players - in the article Gabriel, a pupil at Weald Primary School, describes it as "quite cool". Not only is bridge a fun activity for the children, but teachers and parents have also observed how it offers numerous opportunities for academic and personal development.

The BBC also featured the story on Radio 5 Live (see below) and talked to school teacher Ann Hutchison and junior internationals Jasmine Bakhshi and Liam Sanderson. The story was also on their Breakfast program on Sunday morning (sadly that is not available to watch on the iPlayer), and on Radio 5 Live.

English Bridge Education and Development are very keen to help establish bridge groups in schools and can provide equipment, teaching materials and contacts in the local area to help get things off the ground. Please contact Richard Banbury - richard@ebedcio.org.uk - for more information.
