Landy

Landy is a defensive action after the opponents open 1NT (balanced) attributed to American Alvin Landy. The advancer is the partner of the intervenor.

All bids are natural except 2♣ which promises both Majors by the intervenor.  Perhaps the simplest of defence to 1NT conventions; however, there are a number of hand types that it does not cover and regular tournament players are likely to want something more complex.

- 1NT, Dble: intended as penalty showing 16+HCP and Advancer would normally pass.  However, if Advancer must bid then it should be 'System On' as if partner opened 1NT (i.e. Stayman, Transfers or any other agree mechanism should be used).

- 1NT, 2♣ :  The 'alertable' Landy convention bid to show 2-suited in the Majors (recommend this is minimum 5-4 shape).  Advancer would normally bid the better fitting Major or 2 (relay) with equal length or a better hand.  After the relay the intervenor can then bid the longer / better Major after which Advancer makes a natural bid (Pass, Raise, NT).

- 1NT, 2 /2 /2♠ :  Natural bid showing a one-suited hand (best played as 6-card suit).

- 1NT, 3♣ :  Natural bid showing a one-suited Club (6-card suit).
