Useful Gadgets (2) Roman Key Card Blackwood

Using 5-card Puppet Stayman (see above) North discovers a 5-3 Spade fit

Playing ordinary Blackwood North can only discover four Aces

Roman Keycard Blackwood asks how many of five Key Cards do you have?
(the five Key Cards are the four Aces and the King of Trumps)

When North bids 4NT (RKCB) South will reply as follows:

  • 5♣ = I have none or three
  • 5 = I have one or four
  • 5 = I have two or five but do not have the Trump Queen
  • 5♠ = I have two or five and I also have the Trump Queen

When South bids 5♠ North can work out South must have 5 Key Cards (all four Aces and the ♠ K) and the ♠ Q

That is enough to bid 6♠ but stop short of 7♠ since South cannot have the ♣ K as well or they would have exceed the 22 points max for their 2NT opening

Useful Gadgets(1) - 5 Card Puppet Stayman

You are playing the first board in the first round of the 2003 World Championships for USA1 vs Australia. When you're partner opens 2NT what is the question you'd like to ask him were you allowed to bid in plain English rather than have to use bidding cards?

You'd like to say "have you got a 5 card Major suit partner?".

Well the good news is you can if you play 5-card Major Puppet Stayman over 2NT

3♣ asks "have you got a 5 card Major suit partner?".

Partner then responds:

  • 3 = I don't have a 5CM but I do have a 4CM
  • 3 = I have 5 Hearts
  • 3♠ = I have 5 Spades
  • 3NT = I have neither a 5-card, nor a 4-card, Major

After the sequence 2NT - 3♣ - 3

  •  3 says I have Four Spades
  • 3♠ says I have Four Hearts
  • 3NT says I have neither Four Hearts nor Four Spades
  • 4 says I have Four Hearts and Four Spades
