Simple Arithmetic

This hand came up at Colchester on 16th February. My partner opened 2NT as we allow that with a singleton Ace and I responded a quantitaive 5NT which with 22 points he duly converted to 7NT.

A more traditional opening would be 2♣ followed by a positive from North and a positive rebid from South. Now North can see 38 points and should bid 7NT.

Board 6: No Trumps? Not Always!

Three out of four pairs played in 3NT and two of them got lucky and made it. Playing in 3NT with a 5.0.2.6 shape isn't recommended for those of nervous dispositions however and 5 Clubs is an easy make if you can bid it.

East should open 1C under the rule of 20.. Length before strength, remember, and if you don't start with Clubs you will never show the shape of your hand. West temporises with 1D as it would be wrong to rush to 3NT. 1D is forcing and we will learn a lot from Opener's rebid. East will rebid 1S and now West has the perfect hand to bid 3NT.

East should not Pass 3NT. They have already shown 5 Clubs and 4 Spades from their bidding. By bidding 4S they show their fifth Spade and their 6th Club at the same time because if they were 5-5 they would have opened 1S not 1C. It is an easy decision for West to prefer a 6-3 Club fit over a 5-2 Spade fit.

5C can't be defeated. You have three losers (a Spade, a Diamond and a Club) but the defence are under pressure and if they don't give a trick away you can ruff the Spades good. 3NT can't be made against best defence. Can you see why?

North should lead  10.  South knows North hasn't got  10 9 8 so must have  Q10 9.

South must play  K and if West doesn't win keep playing Hearts starting with the Eight.

Now East is kept to one Heart winner and can't establish dummy's Clubs without losing the lead and can't stop the defence winning three Hearts, a club and the  A.
