One can only assume North didn't open 1♠. If (s)he did then South would likely have led the ♠ 9 and the defence would have taken six Tricks (four Spades, ♥ A, ♣ K)
Without any clue that North has Spades South will lead a Heart or a Club and East comes to 9 tricks.
